In 1980,a syndication firm called Drake-Chenault,launched a program called "The Weekly Top 30"-This was the first attempt to go up against "American Top 40",which was about to celebrate its first decade on the air-The three-hour countdown was hosted by Mark Elliott, who filled in for Casey Kasem several times on "American Top 40" & "Casey's Top 40"-The show's introduction said that the rankings were determined by a "countdown computer"-Elliott never revealed the actual source-Perhaps it could've been a combination of the major trade papers that were in existence at that time:"Billboard","Cash Box","Radio & Records" & "Record World"-My local station,WICC,in Bridgeport,CT ran "WT30" on Saturday nights-Unfortunately,the show was no match for "AT40" & was cancelled in 1982-Does anyone else remember this show?

Of course, I remember the Weekly Top 30. I was working at a radio station in Alabama that ran Drake-Chenault programming but we did not run the WT30 (although they wanted us to). I have a copy of one of the shows (from June 1981) and while I always thought the chart wasn't that accurate (Countdown Computer?) but I always enjoyed the production values used on the show. It was very well done but I believe the show lasted less than three years due to the fact that AT40 had most of the best stations in any given area.

I remember hearing "Weekly Top 30" a few times. It was originally on Saturday mornings on KCBS-FM (now Alice 97) in my area, and then switched over to K101 (now Star FM) around Fall 1981, at about the same time KCBS picked up "American Top 40". K101 carried "Weekly Top 30" until the show's cancellation in 1982, and then, a few months later, picked up "American Top 40" after KCBS changed to a hard-rock format.

Staying under General Music Discussion, there's another thread with much more about this (sadly) forgotten show. Look for, simply, "Weekly Top 30 with Mark Elliot."

Hi,doofus67,I just saw the earlier post regarding the "Weekly Top 40"-I forgot that it premiered a year before "American Top 40's" 10th anniversary.
