Even though I enjoyed pop tunes as far back as 1967, I never bought a 45 of my own until January 1972. I was hoping it would be "American Pie," but they were all sold out. My second choice was Melanie's "Brand New Key." I ended up buying Don McLean's epic tune the next time I went to the store.
The first album of songs from the then-current year that I recall listening to was the Tijuana Brass's 1967 album "Sounds Like." However, that was one that my father bought for the whole family when he bought a new stereo. The first album that was truly mine wasn't until nearly a decade later, with Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life."
I never had an eight-track player, but the first 8-track I recall seeing was an Elton John album in July 1974 (can;'t remember which one---possibly "Caribou.")
My first cassette tape of pre-bought music was K-Tel's "Soundwaves" in late 1980. However, my first cassette of songs I taped off the radio was a Summer 1976 tape of big hits of the time such as "Let "Em In," "Afternoon Delight," and about a dozen more.
Because CDs were so overpriced for so long, I never bought a CD player until the 2000s. I had won several CDs during the 1990s and had to donate them. The first one that I kept was Springsteen's 2002 album "The Rising."
My first download of a then-current song was probably Adele's "Chasing Pavements" in late 2008 or early 2009.
