In the "Your Favorite Songs from This Weekend's 70/80 shows" thread, I mention how "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts is the first single I ever remember having. It might be fun to see which single, album, 8-track, cassette, CD or download was your first, whether you purchased it or it was a gift. First single: "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts (1972) First album: "Wings Over America" by Paul McCartney & Wings (1976) First 8-track: "Greatest Hits, Volume 2" by Elton John (1977... our family splurged and bought a stereo) First cassette: "Synchronicity" by The Police (1983) First CDs: I bought all of these at the same time in 1987: "America's Greatest Hits" by America, "Chronicle" by CCR, "Greatest Hits" by Seals & Crofts, "Rewind" by The Rolling Stones, and "The Best Of Three Dog Night" by Three Dog Night. Classic rock was making a comeback in 1987 so I added many classic rock CDs for a few years. First iPod download: When I first purchased an iPod in 2002, I remember adding all of my Elton John CDs to my iPod right away with "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" being the first song played. Am I considered an old fart that I never used Napster (too chicken ) and I don't purchase from iTunes?

First single: "Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again," Barry Manilow, 1976. Powder blue label with black Arista logo. Still my favorite label.
First vinyl album: "Rock of the Westies," Elton John, 1975. My older brother bought "Capt. Fantastic" at the same time. Come to find out later, both debuted at #1.
First 8-track: none.
First cassette: "The Steve Martin Brothers," 1982. Side one was the last of his stand-up; side two was the first of the bluegrass music that would win him a couple of Grammys.
First CD: "Purple Rain", movie soundtrack, Prince, purchased in 1990. Had to start that collection with my favorite artist of the 80s.
First download: "Stayin' Alive," the Bee Gees, 2011. Put it on the computer, not an iPod.

Legally or illegally? Stealing music used to mean stuffing the 45 in your shirt. And as a poor/stupid teenager I did perlion one or two in this manner:
Cassettes (from KMart): TV Theme Songs by Mike Post and Private Eyes by Hall and Oates Vinyl album (from Thrifty Drug): Some early 70s greatest hits on Pickwick Records CD (from a recently defunct local record store): Soul Alone by Daryl Hall First Download: Peacekeeper by Fleetwood Mac First legal 45 (from TG&Y) The Border by Amercia First borrowed 45, (also from TG&Y) Far From Over by Frank Stallone...I really need to return it! Cassingle (from defunct Hastings): Something In Your Eyes by Richard Carpenter CD single (radio station in Roswell, NM was handing them out): True Love by Elt and Kiki Dee
I still have all of the above

First cassette: Not counting some Nana Mouskouri tapes I saw advertised on TV and asked my grandmother to get me a few years earlier, the first cassette I got was "The Best of Blondie", which I won from a boardwalk vendor on a trip to either Wildwood or Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1992. Unfortunately, when I played the tape later that day, the tape player spat the tape out and mangled it.
First CDs: The first CDs I got were when I signed up for Columbia House in 1993. I got 4 CDs from that initial offer, but I don't remember exactly which ones I got. They might have been among the following: The Bangles' "Greatest Hits", Fleetwood Mac's "Greatest Hits", "The Best of Blondie" (to replace the mangled tape), Duran Duran's "Decade", Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
First mp3: After hearing about Napster in 2000, my first download was a song I had stuck in my head that day: "I'd Love to Change the World" by Ten Years After.
