Ammon Tharp, drummer for Bill Deal and the Rhondels passed away Friday, September 22 at the age of 75. 1969 was the year for this band who successfully crossed blue-eyed soul with beach music. The band placed three songs in the lower half of the Top 40. The first "May I" was a cover of a Maurice Williams tune. It snuck into the Top 40 and peaked at #39 early in 1965. Their other two Top 40 hits were covers of songs originally released by The Tams. "I've Been Hurt" was a significant hit regionally in North Carolina and Virginia for The Tams, but did not chart nationally. Bill Deal and the Rhondels peaked at #35 with their cover. The most successful single for both The Tams & Bill Deal and the Rhondels was this song. The only Top 40 hit for The Tams, it peaked at #9. Bill Deal and the Rhondels took it to #23. Great memories of Bill Deal and the Rhondells music. An oldies 45 of May I/I've Been Hurt occupied the first slot of a jukebox at a bowling alley bar where I was in a league on Friday nights in the early 80s. Pumped in a lot of quarters so I could listen to both sides. What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am - Bill Deal and the RhondelsObituary
