Did John Williams score from the original movie ever hit the hot 100?

"Theme from Superman" peaked at #81 in 1979. Also, "Can You Read My Mind" by Maureen McGovern (which I don't think was in the film, but was based on music from the movie) peaked at #52.
One song that hasn't been mentioned yet: "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang.

Not one, but two 'Superman' songs that have not yet been mentioned, and both of them came oh-so-close to appearing on AT40. Both peaked at #41. First, and I can't believe I beat Dave Wollenberg with this one, was Donna Fargo's follow-up to "Funny Face" in 1973, simply titled "Superman". Second, a great tune from the Kinks from 1979: "(I Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman".

I remember Larry Lujack well, first on WCFL in the mid '70's, then during his second stint on WLS in the late '70's and the '80's. I especially enjoyed his partnership with "Little" Tommy Edwards on those funny "Animal Stories" segments on WLS. I remember Larry came out of retirement in the early 2000's to host the morning show with Tommy on some short-lived Chicage oldies stations. (I heard it only once, on a summer trip to Chicago.) I believe Larry Lujack passed away in 2013. I similarly remember Larry's trademark good-natured grump persona, which I mostly found amusingly quirkly and endearing. However, after reading your account of his unfair dissing of the "Superman" song, I'm not quite so endeared by him as before. I presume he didn't care much for the big hit "Vehicle", which is his perogative. But it was most unfair of him to singlehandedly deny his listeners the right to give this soundalike followup a chance based solely on his preferences. No on-air personality should have this much power. I wonder what Jim Peterik and company felt about Larry Lujack's snubbing of their song. Was this the beginning of a feud between the two parties? Ol' Uncle Lar is indeed gone. Lil Tommy (Edwards) retired from radio in 2014, but is still the public announcer at the Chicago Bulls games. On the Ides Of March, "Last Band Standing - 50th Anniversary" greatest hits collection among the acknowledgements was this comment "To mention a few who were there in the beginning...Larry Lujack (We'll forgive you for that crack about Superman Uncle Lar!)...

IIRC, an instrumental version of the song was played in the movie as Superman was flying Lois Lane around the city.

In the 00's Kenny Rogers had a small country hit with The Last Ten Years (Superman). IMO radio should be ashamed of itself this wasn't much bigger.

Utopia had a hit in 1980 called "Set Me Free" containing the line "Well I Ain't No Superman, If That's What You Demand Then Set Me Free."

Love that Maureen McGovern song. Certainly deserved better than #52, IMO. Still a lot of disco on the top 40 charts at that time. (Not complaining about that - love disco.)
