2016 has lost some great music legends. David Bowie, Glenn Frey, a member of Mott the Hoople, etc. And now, we lost the founder and former lead singer of Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White. www.ctvnews.ca/entertainment/earth-wind-fire-founder-maurice-white-dies-at-74-1.2765326I first heard the news on Facebook, as his brother, Verdine White, had posted the sad news. R.I.P., Maurice.

This is really sad news. When I made the switch from cassettes to CDs in 1987, The Best Of Earth Wind & Fire Vol. 1 was one of the first CDs I purchased. I loved the horns but I also loved Maurice White and Philip Bailey singing such awesome tunes. Whether it was an upbeat tune like "Shining Star" or "September", or a ballad like "Can't Hide Love" or "After The Love Is Gone", they sang and produced such wonderful tunes. "Boogie Wonderland" with the Emotions is also one of my favorite tunes from EW&F.
I had no idea that Maurice had been diagnosed with Parkinson's back in the late 1980s. God bless Maurice, his family and his bandmates.

I had no idea that Maurice had been diagnosed with Parkinson's back in the late 1980s. God bless Maurice, his family and his bandmates. Maybe that might explain why he never appeared in the music video for "System of Survival" in 1987, unless I missed something. I believe he did appear in the music video for "Thinking of You", which was also from 1987. They are my two most favorite post-disco EW&F songs, and I think they should have made it to AT40, even if for just one week apiece. Maurice's condition may also explain why Philip Bailey had eventually served as the group's main lead singer, as per Pop-Up Video factoid at the end of "Boogie Wonderland" in the "Disco" episode from 2000. "Sunday Morning" was the band's swan song on AT40 in 1993.

Let's not forget his pre-EWF career as a member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and his production career bringing acts like Deniece Williams and The Emotions to career prominence.
RIP Maurice.
On July 18. 1999, Earth, Wind and Fire were on an A&E show called "Live By Request" where the callers would determine the set list the artist would play. Maurice White phoned in and his illness was alluded to at the time. He had retired as an performing member of the band but continued to work in an executive and administrative capacity

My parents are big Earth, Wind & Fire fans. I like a lot of their music as well. RIP, Maurice.
BTW, he was in the "System Of Survival" video.

I'm going to do a huge tribute to him next Monday. I may even need more time than I have Kantner!

My all-time favorite songs by Earth, Wind & Fire are "Shining Star", "That's the Way of the World", "After the Love Has Gone", "Let's Groove", "Boogie Wonderland" with The Emotions & "September", may Maurice White rest in peace...
I also like the work that The EWF/Phenix Horns did on "No Reply at All" & "Paperlate" by Genesis, then, Face Value, Hello, I Must Be Going! and No Jacket Required by Phil Collins, also, his duet "Easy Lover" with EWF's Philip Bailey!

No one seems to mention, but I really liked their song "Fantasy" (even more than Shining Star).
Always felt that Fantasy should have been a Top 10 Pop Song. The opening to the song is excellent.
It is as good as Boogie Wonderland.

"Fantasy" is one of my most favorite songs by EW&F. I, too, like it far better than "Shining Star". Plus I didn't care for "Shining Star" because it was too short, i think it clocked in at 2 minutes and so many seconds.
Other songs I like by EW&F are "Serpentine Fire", "Boogie Wonderland", "Sing a Song", "System of Survival" and "Thinking of You", as well as the only slow-tempo ballad i enjoy, 1993's "Sunday Morning."
