You must have meant the first #1 soul hit in the 80s that failed to make AT40. But whereas I had never heard the other 3 songs spotlighted, I have heard that one dozens of times, recently on R&B oldies radio and back in the day in my headphones as a DJ on college radio.

October 15, 1983She told us a year earlier that she wasn't going. This was the first single from her debut album. It reached #2 on the soul chart, but couldn't quite make AT40, stopping at #49 on the Hot 100. I Am Love - Jennifer Holliday October 13, 1979This funktastic number topped the soul chart for 3 weeks and hit #77 on the Hot 100. Hip hop group De La Soul sampled this in their 1989 song "Me Myself And I". The full album version is over 15 minutes, so here's an edited version. (Not Just) Knee Deep - Funkadelic October 10, 1970This was their second of 5 Top 10 soul hits in the '70s, peaking at #6. On the Hot 100, it got as high as #56. (Baby) Turn On To Me - The Impressions

Friends - Whodini October 28, 1972This was the last single this legendary group released on the Motown label before leaving for ABC. It topped out at #8 soul and #53 on the Hot 100. The group would eventually return to Motown in the '80s. (It's The Way) Nature Planned It - The Four Tops November 1, 1975Doing a little something different here, as this song only reached #50 on the soul chart. Normally I highlight songs that reach the Top 40 soul, but I'm highlight this one because it's the last single this family group released before leaving Motown. A song that Troop would cover 14 years later and take to the top of the R&B chart. All I Do Is Think Of You - The Jackson 5And as an extra, here's Troop's version. All I Do Is Think Of You - Troop
