Which song took the most weeks to reach number one on the Hot 100 and spent more than one week atop the chart?
I like thinking of clever titles when I actually start a thread. I hope this one was acceptable.

It was while Casey was doing Casey's Top 40, but Los Del Rio hit #1 with "Macarena" during their 33rd week on the Hot 100. The song spent 14 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100, and if you can believe Wikipedia, "The single spent its final week at No. 1 on its 46th week on the chart, recorded as the latest No. 1 single in Hot 100 history." The song spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100, fell off the chart, and then re-charted so in its second time on the chart, it hit #1.

Thank you for the reply.
Now, does anybody know what song accomplished this feat during the classic AT40 era?

Thank you for the reply. Now, does anybody know what song accomplished this feat during the classic AT40 era? This is really a good question, since most of the 'slow boat' #1s were only #1 for a single week--"Hot Child..." and "Chariots of Fire" come immediately to mind. Perusing Whitburn's #1 Hits list in the back of the book, I'm going to guess that it could be "What's Love Got To Do With It". Debuted on the Hot 100 w/e 5/19/84, hit #1 (for 3 weeks) w/e 9/1/84. Just a guess...

I wonder if it may be "Baby Come To Me" by Patti Austin & James Ingram. That song spent 2 weeks at #1 and finally arrived at #1 in its 19th week on the chart... 27th week if you include the first release of the song in early 1982.
Would "Gloria" by Laura Branigan hold the record for longest trek to peak at #2? She reached #2 in her 21st week on the Billboard Hot 100.

Also reached #2 in it's 21st week on the chart (1971).

Probably the winner--beats my guess (Tina Turner) by three weeks, not counting the earlier chart run.

I believe "Baby, Come to Me" is the winner for a song spending multiple weeks at #1. They needed 19 weeks in just their second chart run alone, Tina only needed 16. Overall, for a single chart run, the winner would in fact be the song we heard played in that top spot just a few months ago. I'm talking about: "Chariots of Fire". Nick Gilder and Robert John actually tied in how long they each took to get to #1 - 21 weeks. Vangelis, beat them both by just one week. (In fact, didn't Casey also say so when he intro-ed the song at #1? I now seem to remember him stating early on in the entire show that a new chart record was being set that week.) Add in the original chart run for "Baby, Come to Me", and then that is the winner, as explained above. But, there is a caveat to considering songs with multiple chart runs. Simply put, what about all the weeks inbetween the two chart runs, hmmmm? To that end, I'd also like to know what the record would be post-1991, for just a single chart run.

"Jessie's Girl" was also in its 19th week on the chart when it hit No.1.
"Don't You Want Me" needed 18.

So, it looks as though "Baby Come to Me" (second chart run only) and "Jessie's Girl" are tied.
Thank you all for your responses. I really do appreciate them.

I hope this one was acceptable. The title is more than acceptable; it's catchy! It sure got my attention. And I'm not alone. As of now, your thread has almost 300 views.
