One of BBC Radio’s most staple fixtures, the Sunday chart show, comes to an end today. www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-33400359Updated link: www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/33401269/friday-best-day-for-official-chart-because-of-weekend-salesThe Sunday broadcast date first moved from the previous date of Saturday to Sunday on January 7, 1962 (at 4pm/local) on BBC Light Programme station (the forerunner to Radio 1 & 2). The chart show was named “Pick of the Pops” (nothing to do with the present day vintage show on Radio 2). When the Light station split into Radio 1 and Radio 2 in 1967, then the Sunday countdown moved to the newly-installed Radio 1. The original BBC chart (also used on TV’s ‘Top of the Pops’) at the beginning was a construction of three or four published charts at the time on various UK music magazines, with a lot of tied-positions. In February 1969, then all of BBC countdowns started using one chart of the trade magazine ‘Record Retailer’ (later re-named ‘Music Week’) as the UK’s “Official Chart”. Audio clips and air-checks from the show’s early years: www.radiorewind.co.uk/radio2/pick_of_the_pops_page.htmThe new Radio 1 chart day will be Fridays, debuting with a one-time five day chart this week (July the 10th at 4pm/local British time or 11am/Eastern).

Sorry if this has been brought up or mentioned before (or if it's common knowledge and I'm late to the party), but I just found out a few days ago that the Official Charts for Britain have their own website: www.officialcharts.com/Includes chart info for both singles and albums, and chart archives.
