September 14, 1974 - A very odd UK chart indeed! At #9 was "You You You" by Alvin Stardust followed at #10 by the previously featured "Na Na Na" by Cozy Powell. Then there was a rock run beginning at #24 with "Rock Me Gently", followed by "Rock The Boat", "Rock Your Baby", and "Rocket" by Mud. Then there was this one which was at it #4 peak. Her last name wasn't Vanderpool or Kirby, rather the Swedish singer's last name was Vrethammar. She would have a follow up single "Hasta La Vista". This chart run lasted 19 weeks, but another run would begin 2 weeks after exiting. That stint lasted 9 weeks with a peak at #35. Y Viva Espana - Sylvia September 17, 1983 - It was spending a second week at its peak #10 position and would chart for 12 weeks. It was the first of 6 Top 10 singles for the group who would cross over to the US and reach the Top 10 in early 1986. The Sun Goes Down (Livin' It Up) - Level 42

October 9, 1971 - Usually try to feature Top 10 UK singles. This one debuted at #44 and just missed the Top 10 peaking at #12. It would chart in the US for a couple of weeks in March, 1972, sneaking in at #91. It took a title change, but in 1974 it would be covered and reach #1 early the following year. It would launch the career of the former producer, arranger, and jingle writer who one released singles as Featherbed. Brandy - Scott English October 12, 1974 - It charted for 10 weeks and peaked at #7. This one charted 14 weeks and peaked in the runner up spot. In The Army Now - Status Quo

October 16, 1976 - Peaking at #61 on the Hot 100, this UK one hit wonder would peak at #4 with their only hit. They were an Australian pop band, whose sound was similar to the late 70 US band Player. The song would chart for 10 weeks. Howzat - Sherbet October 23, 1982 - After lingering barely inside the Top 30 after 5 weeks, this band would leap 27-8 with their only Top 40 UK hit. The upward trend was short lived as it fell out of the Top 10 the following week and exited the charts after 9 weeks. Danger Game -Pinkees October 17, 1987 - As this week's lost 80s classic the Bee Gees' "You Win Again" was sitting atop the UK charts, this one was right behind spending a second week at its peak #2 position. It was a tie-in song to the current Stanley Kubrick movie. Think boot camp meets techno. Full Metal Jacket (I Want To Be Your Drill Instructor) - Abagail Mead & Nigel Goulding

Almost two months before this, from August 18th, 1984, another song, "Video!" by Jeff Lynne, was also released as a single (with a non-album track, "Sooner or Later", as its b-side). It hit #85 on The US Billboard Hot 100, he also contributed "Let It Run" to the 1984 Electric Dreams motion picture soundtrack.

A US non-charter was ending a 12 week UK chart run, having peaked at #4. Lost In Music - Sister Sledge

November 3, 1973 - Although they would not reach the Top 40 in the US until 1984, in the UK they were on a streak of 12 consecutive Top 10 singles. Half of them would top the charts, though this wasn't one of them. It peaked at #2. My Friend Stan - Slade November 4, 1978 - A US lost 70s classic, it would reach the top of the UK charts for a week. Dreadlock Holiday - 10cc November 5, 1983 - Born Peter Robinson, this androgynous pop singer adopted a US movie icon for a stage persona. Debuting at #47, his only Top 40 UK hit would chart for 12 weeks and peak at #4. Calling Your Name - Marilyn November 9, 1985 - It was a Top 40 hit for Laura Branigan and a #1 smash for Celine Dion. Air Supply would reach the Hot 100 with their version, as would the co-songwriter's original release. A different story in the UK. The original was a huge hit, topping the charts for 5 weeks and charting for 33 weeks. Power of Love - Jennifer Rush

November 13, 1971 - The follow up to her first Top 40 single in the US had just exited the Hot 100. It had charted a short 4 weeks and peaked at #94. It was a vastly different story on the UK charts. Leaping 21-11 in its fourth week, the song would peak at #6 and chart for 17 weeks. Banks Of The Ohio - Olivia Newton-John November 14, 1981 - It was ending a three week run at the runner-up spot. If you're celebrating today as we head into midnight on the east coast, here's to ya! You may remember this song when it was featured in the 1984 movie "Sixteen Candles". Happy Birthday - Altered Images

November 19, 1977 - This French female disco trio would chart briefly in the Hot 100. Their "Miss Broadway" would peak at #92 during a 4 week run in 1978. Their only hit in the UK charted for 14 non-consecutive weeks and peaked at #2. Like a few disco hits, it's an update of a huge mid-60s hit. Black Is Black - La Belle Epoque November 22, 1980 - As Abba debuted in the US with their last Top 10 hit "The Winner Tales It All", they leaped 13-2 in their second week on the UK with what would be the follow up to "The Winner Takes It All" in the US. It would begin a three week run at the top the following week. Tragically, it was bumped from the top when "(Just Like) Starting Over" would reach #1 in the wake of the John Lennon assassination. In the US, it peaked just outside the Top 40 reaching #45 during an 11 week chart run. Super Trouper - ABBA
