Johnny Kemp is tied into "American Top 40" history in a way. His biggest record and claim to fame, "Just Got Paid," peaked at #10 on Shadoe Stevens' first show, 8/13/88.

It really is shocking that, out of nowhere, a popular singer dies, especially since he was not even close to 60 yet. Wouldn't surprise me if drugs could be to blame.
And I agree with doofus67. Johnny Kemp made his mark in AT40 history as being the artist who kicked off the first top ten of the Shadoe Stevens era.
But didn't Johnny Kemp have only one other top 40 hit in 1989, though very underrated - called "Birthday Suit"?
