Top 40 hits that made the Top 40 as remakes in the 1970s - Sam Cooke had four, I think - Another Saturday Night, Cupid and Only Sixteen (at the same time) and Wonderful World.
Did anyone have more?

The Beatles came close with three - "Come Together", "Got to Get You into My Life", and "We Can Work It Out". Plus, "Oh! Darling" and "You Won't See Me" hit the Top 40, but the originals didn't.

Ben E. King had four: Don't Play That Song, I (Who Have Nothing), Spanish Harlem, & Stand By Me.
Temptations also had four: Get Ready, (I Know) I'm Losing You, Ain't Too Proud To Beg, & The Way You Do The Things You Do

Should include the Four Tops with four (but some may say the last one shouldn't count): Reach Out I'll Be There, I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch), It's The Same Old Song, and MacArthur Park.

Why shouldn't Macarthur Park count? Made the 40. Just because Donna Summer has the definitive remake with the most success, doesn't take the accomplishment away.

The Beach Boys had a few - Good Vibrations, Surfin' U.S.A., Help Me Rhonda and Don't Worry Baby all had top 40 remakes in the 70's.
