Marlene Barrow-Tate, member of the Andantes passed away Monday, February 23. Although the Andantes never had a hit record, they were as vocally important to Motown as the Funk Brothers were instrumentally. Their background vocals were present on the #1 songs "My Guy" by Mary Wells, "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" by the Four Tops, and Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". There were dozens of other Motown hits as well including the majority of the Four Tops and Marvin Gaye's 60s catalog. Outside of Motown, they backed Jackie Wilson on "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher". Marlene also filled in for Florence Ballard at live performances at the end of her time with the Supremes. RIP Marlene, a true unsung Motown hero. www.vintagevinylnews.com/2015/02/passings-marlene-judy-barrow-tate-of.html
