This past weekend, I listened to the American Top 40 show from January 21, 1984, one of the many shows that are in my AT40 collection. For all of us longtime listeners, some of these AT40 shows were full of surprises and this particular show was no exception. Here are the details:
The Beatles presence was felt on this show:
The Beatles were mentioned in trivia question involving the most successful acts of the 1940's and 1970's. Of course, they were the No. 1 act of the 1960's. Casey did a segment on German language songs as Nena's hit "99 Luftballons" debuted in the Top 40 that week and it was one of the few German language songs that hit the charts and the Beatles German version of "She Loves You" titled "Sie Liebt Dich" was the only one of those German language songs that didn't hit the Top 40, in fact, it was their lowest charting single, peaking at No. 97. Also, their song, "Hello Goodbye" was featured in a Long Distance Dedication. Plus, John Lennon had a song, "Nobody Told Me" debuted on the Hot 100 that week. He recorded that song shortly before his death in December 1980. Also, Paul McCartney had 2 songs in the Top 40 that week, "So Bad" and His No. 1 smash, "Say Say Say" his duet with Michael Jackson.
Lionel Richie had 3 songs played on the show that week. "Running Through The Night", and his No. 1 hits, "All Night Long (All Night)" and "Endless Love". "Endless Love" was played in a Long Distance Dedication and "Endless Love" and "All Night Long" were played back to back.
3 consecutive songs from artists from my home state of Michigan were played, "Time Will Reveal" by DeBarge, "Holiday" by Madonna and "I Just Can't Get Over Loving You" by Ray Parker Jr.
"Say Say Say" was Paul McCartney's last No. 1 hit
"Twist Of Fate" by Olivia Newton John was her last Top 10 hit.
Christopher Cross and Barry Manilow had their last Top 40 hit played on that show, "Think Of Laura" and "Read 'Em and Weep"
