12/6/86:Billy Vera & The Beaters - At This Moment Gregory Abbott - Shake You DownHoward Jones - You Know I Love You ... Don´t You ? Kansas - All I Wanted Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life An Austrian extra: BluesbreakersThe birthplace of the "Bluesbreakers" in 1985 lies in a cellar in Steindorf on Lake Ossiach (Carinthia), where Reinhold Habernig, who had already made a name for himself as the drummer of the legendary "Shades" in the 1960s, couldn´t close his eyes to the mysterious reputation of the blues. The bassist Ossi Huber and the singer Dieter Themel were there from the beginning and after some line-up changes in the band, concerning the guitarist, a line-up crystallizes out, which recorded the first album "Steppin´ Out" in Vienna in 1985: Jörg Friessnegg (lead guitar, slide guitar), Norbert Eipeltauer (lead guitar), Reinhold Habernig (drums, backing vocals) Arthur Ottowitz (harmonica, accordeon, keyboards), Ossi Huber (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Dieter Themel (lead vocals). The Bluesbreakers represented Austria at a big festival in Bursa (Turkey) and the personal view of contemporary blues brings the band to all big Austrian festivals, like the Donauinselfest in Vienna or the Stadtfest in Graz. The year 1989 leads the "Bluesbreakers" on their first China tour to Beijing, Tianjin and Guilin - completely sold out concerts in front of thousands of spectators. Back home again, they can celebrate their biggest success so far with the single "Yellow Moon", which was created at the "Great Wall".
"Yellow Moon" is available, besides samples of other songs, even as a download on the homepage of the Bluesbreakers: www.bluesbreakers.at

Either I'm giving out gift reviews for Christmas or these are two great countdowns this week...
My Top 31 songs from the 12/16/78 countdown (absolute faves in bold): Top 10: All of 'em! You Don't Bring Me Flowers, Le Freak, Too Much Heaven, I Just Wanna Stop, My Life, I Love The Nightlife (Disco Round), Time Passages, Sharing The Night Together, (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away, MacArthur Park #11-20: Strange Way, YMCA, Hold The Line, How Much I Feel, Straight On, Ooh Baby Baby, Alive Again #21-30: We've Got Tonite, I'm Every Woman, The Power Of Gold, New York Groove, A Little More Love, Bicycle Race/Fat Bottomed Girls, Every 1's A Winner, Double Vision, Shake It #31-40: September, Fire, I Was Made For Dancin', My Best Friend's Girl, Don't Hold Back* * The song kicking off this week's countdown is a forgotten gem so Chanson's getting featured here. This is one cool groove. Bonus points for the baritone saxophone in this tune. The bari sax is a forgotten instrument these days, and it adds a bottom layer to songs that is desperately missing in tunes today:
My Top 30 songs from the 12/15/84 countdown: Top 10: Out Of Touch, Wild Boys, Like A Virgin, I Feel For You, Sea Of Love, No More Lonely Nights, Cool It Now, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, We Belong #11-20: Penny Lover, Valotte, I Can't Hold Back, Born In The USA, Run To You, Strut, Walking On A Thin Line, Do What You Do, Better Be Good To Me #21-30: Hello Again, You're The Inspiration, Understanding, Purple Rain, Jamie, Centipede, The Boys Of Summer, Easy Lover #31-40: Stranger In Town, I Want To Know What Love Is, Loverboy, Love Light In Flight* * The song kicking off this week's countdown is a gem (but not forgotten) so Stevie's getting featured here. Way cool keyboards, great background singer lines, and Stevie's voice make this one of my all-time favorites to peak at #17:

15/12/84:
Billy Ocean - Loverboy Chicago - You´re The Inspiration Daryl Hall & John Oates - Out Of Touch REO Speedwagon - I Do´ Wanna Know The Cars - Hello Again
Band Aid 1984
When Bob Geldof came home in the evening of 10/23/1984, he was devastated. He had been trying all day to convince the radio stations of the new Boomtown Rats single "Dave" - but in vain. Now he just wanted to relax in front of the TV and watch the evening news from the BBC. But what he saw in the eight-minute report by BBC journalist Michael Buerk shocked him deeply. The rest is a well-known pop story. This week some artists of the "Band Aid 1984" project are in the countdown, so, here´s a "Band Aid 1984 member"-edition:
12/15/84:
Duran Duran - The Wild Boys Paul McCartney - No More Lonely Nights Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go
Anticipation is half the fun
The most beautiful joy is the anticipation, even at Christmas. And when it gets calmer just before Christmas Eve, you sometimes find yourself in situations that you can´t get into throughout the year. That´s what happened to me a few years ago on the night of 12/23. Together with a good friend I visited a cinema near the city of Salzburg. We were the only two visitors of this movie and we were allowed to choose our seats freely. From more than 400 seats a free choice of seats and that without surcharge or reservation of the entire cinema hall. Such a thing is really only possible at special times. There are five songs from movies this week, which brings me directly to my "movie"-edition:
12/15/84:
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Understanding John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - Tender Years Paul McCartney - No More Lonely Nights Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain Stevie Wonder - Love Light In Flight
An Austrian extra: Gandalf
It´s not really unusual for the pre-Christmas period to be calmer and more contemplative. And that goes for the Austrian extras, too: Heinz Strobl alias Gandalf is a musical poet from Pressbaum (Lower Austria). Usually without words, he tells stories in finely structured compositions based on piano or guitar that spring from his soul world. The language of his music is international and has earned him recognition far beyond the borders of his homeland over the course of a career that has now lasted for almost four decades. He is inspired by classical music as well as the ethnic music of other cultures. When asked about his personal resume, he recently said: "In my profession, heart and soul are the most important things. You can tell if someone sees his profession as his calling. Originally I was a service technician at Vienna Airport, dealing with radio, radar and navigation. I started playing the guitar when I was 14. Until I could really do it, my talent gave me a high motivation and inner drive, but also a lot of diligence was necessary. I had a family when I was very young. When I was in my mid-20s I got my own studio. It suited me more to discover and explore my own music. My music didn´t fit anywhere, in the USA I got into the drawer of the "New Age", that was the trend in the 80s. There I published first, because in Austria there were no stations for my music yet. I played more on foreign stages than in Austria. In Holland the audience was particularly open. I moved between Brazil tour, solo and philharmonic concerts, also in the "Vienna Konzerthaus". I never cared about genre clichés. My music always came from my visions. But marketing needs a stamp. And finally Ö3 started to play me and I also took part in Austro Rock festivals. I´m happy that I´ve been living off music for 40 years and that I´ve never been able to adapt to commercial streams. The emergence of serious music, the atmospheric sound, the keyboard have made further developments possible."
Here´s Gandalf with his most famous song - "Cosmic Balance" from his 1983 album "To Another Horizon":
from my musical category "daydreamer" My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

^^ trekkielo is a fan of only seven songs from this weekend's '80s countdown? What up with that? This might require a Casey Kasem special report . My Top 30 songs from the 12/26/87 countdown (and more absolute faves in bold than usual given it's the Christmas season):Top 10: So Emotional, Is This Love, Got My Mind Set On You, Shake Your Love, Don't You Want Me, The Way You Make Me Feel, Catch Me (I'm Falling), Cherry Bomb, Need You Tonight #11-20: Valerie, Tell It To My Heart, Candle In The Wind, Dude (Looks Like A Lady), Hazy Shade Of Winter, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, There's The Girl #21-30: I've Had The Time Of My Life, Crazy, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, Hungry Eyes, Should've Known Better, We'll Be Together, Tunnel Of Love #31-40: I Live For Your Love, True Faith*, Say You Will, Don't Shed A Tear, Everywhere, What Have I Done To Deserve This, Push It* New Order gets my '80s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. This only peaked at #32? This is a late '80s masterpiece. Here's the full version: My Top 19 songs from the 12/16/72 countdown:Top 10: Me. & Mrs. Jones, I Am Woman, If You Don't Know Me By Know, It Never Rains In Southern California, Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, Clair, Ventura Highway, I Can See Clearly Now, I'm Stone In Love With You #11-20: Superfly, Summer Breeze, Living In The Past #21-30: Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels), Dialogue (Parts 1 & 2), Superstition, I'd Love You To Want Me, I'll Be Around#31-40: I Wanna Be With You, You're So Vain* Billy Paul gets my 70s Pick Hit this week. If I had an all-time Hot 100, this would very likely be on that chart...I LUV this song! The orchestration, his crooning, the trumpet pop occurring after "I know she'll be there..." and "that we don't build our hopes up too high..." WAAAAAAAA! This is a way cool tune:

12/26/87:Def Leppard - Animal Men Without Hats - Pop Goes The World Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done To Deserve This ? Richard Marx - Should´ve Known Better Stryper - HonestlyChristmas 2019In most European countries there are two other Christmas holidays beside Christmas Eve: Christmas Day on 12/25 and Saint Stephen´s Day on 12/26, so most of the shops are closed on those days. And this brings me to an extra show, this time from the summer of 1985: 6/1/85 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Billy Ocean - SuddenlyJulian Lennon - Say You´re Wrong Mick Jagger - Lucky In Love Phil Collins - Sussudio Whitney Houston - You Give Good LoveWhat are members of this thread doing for Christmas 2019 ? Well, 80sat40fan could listen to music with a suitable hookline, or dance to New Order´s "True Faith". seminolefan probably celebrates his birthday and trekkielo listens to one of the fantastic ELO albums. Jessica hopes to hear more shows from 1988 next year and listenerwants2know wonders if he shouldn´t think of summer rather than winter in view of the mild weather. So, here´s a " summer"-edition for this week: 12/26/87:Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth Foreigner - Say You Will Heart - There´s The Girl John Cougar Mellencamp - Cherry Bomb Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love 6/1/85 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):David Lee Roth - Just A Gigolo/I Ain´t Got Nobody Katrina & The Waves - Walking On Sunshine Kool & The Gang - Fresh Madonna - Angel Mary Jane Girls - In My House Even if Belinda Carlisle´s "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" appears here in a " summer"-edition, this song will always remind me of a onset of winter in the first weeks of 1988. It was on a Sunday morning, just after 11 am. On the playlist of Ö3 was "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" with start time at 11.05 am. But since the traffic service took about 7 minutes due to the current weather (smartphones, apps and internet were rather foreign words at that time), the music program on this Sunday was somewhat limited. Let´s stay with Belinda Carlisle for a moment. In one AT40 show, there is a report about a birthday surprise for Belinda Carlisle, which she will probably think of again and again. Yeah, that´s how it is with best friends. They always amaze you, but they are especially important, so here is my " best friends"-edition - and to each of my best friends: "Thank You For Being A Friend". 12/26/87:George Harrison - Got My Mind Set On You INXS - Need You Tonight New Order - True Faith Steve Winwood - Valerie Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart 6/1/85 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Duran Duran - A View To A Kill John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - Tough All Over Kim Carnes - Crazy In The Night Simple Minds - Don´t You (Forget About Me) Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World "Need You Tonight" reminds me of a New Year´s Eve party near the city of Salzburg. Thanks to a friend of a member of our group at that time, we were allowed to celebrate the turn of the year in a house in a forest. There was neither street lighting nor any other light source, so it was really pitch black. Access to the front door wasn´t easy due to frozen snow, but the biggest problem was the power supply, because it kept failing. Our disco started shortly after 7 pm with Falco´s "Wiener Blut" (#25 of the Ö3 annual hit parade), but already at #24 (INXS with "Need You Tonight") the power supply failed for the first time. "Need You Tonight" was more of a wish for us that night in the direction of "may the power supply work halfway through that night", which it ultimately did. And at the end of my Christmas post I have another " love"-edtion, because Christmas is simply the celebration of love. But even if someone doesn´t celebrate Christmas, a " love"-edition is probably no mistake: 12/26/87:Elton John - Candle In The Wind Eric Carmen - Hungry Eyes Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere Natalie Cole - I Live For Your Love Tiffany - Could´ve Been6/1/85 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Bryan Adams - Heaven Madonna - Crazy For You Paul Young - Everytime You Go Away Sade - Smooth Operator Survivor - The Search Is OverAn Austrian extra: PapermoonThe duo Papermoon was founded in 1991 by Christof Straub (guitar) and Edina Thalhammer (vocals). Still in the fall of that year Papermoon won a band competition with cover versions of Suzanne Vega and the Beatles. Among other things, the profit was used to produce the song "Tell Me A Poem": Edina Thalhammer is the daughter of professor Beatrice Ferolli (a well-known novelist and screenwriter) and doctor Erwin Thalhammer (writer and former president of the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments). Edina´s favorite singer is Sinead O´Connor, her favorite band U2, her favorite song "Sound Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel and her first record she bought, "Hotter Than July" by Stevie Wonder. But there are also Christmas songs from Papermoon, for example from 2002 "Doop Doop": And very contemplative is the CD " Christmas Unplugged" from 2006. Here are two songs - "Let It Snow" and "Winter Wonderland": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

In these days there is the absolute "1985-Flashback" feeling for me: First, the latest book by Andrew Ridgeley "Wham! - George and I": Andrew talks about the time with George: "It was an extraordinary time in my life - in our life. It was the realization of our goals. Especially in the age between 19 and 23 years - it was an intensive period. George was my best friend and we had a lot of fun together. We shared a love of humor and music." When asked if there really were two different Georges - one private and one professional - he answers: "There was the private George who was a great friend and then there was the George who pursued his career goals and was a performer. Private George couldn´t do that for him. In private he was funny, reserved, polite, likeable - like the best friend everyone wants." But there was never any real trouble between the two. Of course, not everything was always rosy, but they were far too busy developing their careers and too good friends to argue constantly. In addition to Andrew Ridgley´s book, the films "The Goonies" and "Back To The Future" were once again repeated on TV. Both films bear the signature of Steven Spielberg. And speaking of Steven Spielberg: In 1998, Steven Spielberg confirmed to a German-language news magazine that former ancestors had moved from the then Kingdom of Hungary to the Duchy of Styria around 1830. His family name refers to the Spielberg Castle. Today the main square of Spielberg has the name "Steven Spielberg Square". In the municipal area of Spielberg lies the "Österreichring", on which the Austrian Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship was held from 1970 to 1987 and from 1997 to 2003. After the ring had already been demolished, it was announced in April 2008 that the Austrian drinks manufacturer Red Bull wanted to rebuild the track. The ring was modernised, but the route remained the same. The race track was given the name Red Bull Ring. The Ring was officially opened on 3/15/2011. The first major event at the new Ring took place on 7/5/2011 with a DTM race. In June 2014 Formula 1 returned to Spielberg. In 2020, the "Grand Prix of Austria" is scheduled to take place on 7/5 (see www.gpticketshop.com/en/f1/f1-grand-prix-austria/tickets.html for details). In the movie itself there is a Wurlitzer 1015 jukebox in the 1955 cafe, the boxes on the table are "Seeburg Brand". However, this combination might not work because the boxes were made by Seeburg for their 45 RPM jukeboxes and the Wurlitzer 1015 needs 78 RPM boxes. And this brings us to the topic of "music" and a selection of (real) dance music: 1/4/86 (Top 100 of 1985):blues Billy Ocean - Suddenly Kool & The Gang - Cherish Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin - Separate Lives REO Speedwagon - Can´t Fight This Feeling USA for Africa - We Are The Worldcha cha cha Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A. For example, the first time travel started on 10/26/1985. Thank you, Mr Spielberg - the 26th of October is (as is well known) the Austrian National Holiday. And after New Year´s Day there is another holiday in Austria on 1/6, which for many usually means the end of the Christmas holidays. Another holiday - another show, this time from 1/12/1985: 1/12/85 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke): Culture Club - Mistake No. 3Cyndi Lauper - Money Changes Everything Ray Parker Junior - Jamie Steve Perry - Foolish HeartThe Cars - Hello Again An Austrian extra: Old FormationHigh time for rock´n´roll, also in this week´s Austrian extra. Robert Toegel (vocals, saxophone), Otto Sotosek (vocals, drums) and Josef Veprek (piano) founded a band in 1981 with the aim of occasionally playing for rock´n´roll dancers and fans in relevant clubs. They were joined by Andreas Kaltenhauser (vocals, guitar), Gerhard Donhofer (bass) and finally Josef Meiböck (vocals). Almost by chance they came in contact with the former label CBS Records. In October 1981 the first album was recorded and presented in March 1982. In 1982 and 1983 the Old Formation was also the support act for concerts of Shakin´ Stevens in Vienna and Linz. The release "Rain in the City" was immediately placed in the Austrian Charts and is still a standard for groups with the appropriate repertoire:
from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
