An Austrian extra: Waterloo
Waterloo, actually Johann "Hans" Kreuzmayr, was born on 11/27/1945 in Altheim, Upper Austria. He grew up as the son of a working class family in Linz. In the late 60s and early 70s the trained carpenter and merchant ran a women´s fashion boutique in Linz. When he was looking for someone to design the displays of his shop, he met his later longtime singing partner Sepp Krassnitzer ("Robinson"). With him he founded the duo "Waterloo & Robinson". In 1976 "Waterloo & Robinson" reached #5 at the Eurovision Song Contest in Den Haag with "My Little World":
In 1981 the pop duo separated and Waterloo started a solo career. He appeared several times at charity events, e.g. events for the benefit of the SOS Children´s Villages and for the charity "Menschen für Menschen – Help for Self-Help in Ethiopia" by Karlheinz Böhm. In the early 90s, Waterloo had the opportunity to spend some time in an Indian reservation in North America, which greatly influenced his other music. His "Indian" albums "Tales of the Sun", "Moon and Stars", "Apache´s Land" and "Indio" followed. At the time of the appearance of "Indio", he was impersonating the Winnetou at the Karl May Festival in Winzendorf, Lower Austria. Since these Karl May Festivals, Waterloo has also appeared as Winnetou in children´s afternoons. Already as a child he felt attracted to the Indians and their culture and also lives today "in his little world" in a house in the middle of nature.
Here´s Waterloo with one of his solo hits - "Impossbile Dream" from 1984:

My Top 25 songs from the 5/25/74 countdown (song titles only, lots of absolute faves in bold): Top 10: The Entertainer, The Show Must Go On, Band On The Run, You Make Me Feel Brand New, Midnight At The Oasis, The Locomotion, I've Been Searching So Long, Help Me #11-20: Sundown, Billy Don't Be A Hero, Oh Very Young, For The Love Of Money, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, Bennie & The Jets, TSOP, I'm In Love* #21-30: If You Loved Me, Hooked On A Feeling, The Payback, Hollywood Swinging, Come & Get Your Love, Mighty Mighty #31-40: Oh My My, I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song, My Mistake (Was To Love You) * I hate to say it took the passing of Aretha Franklin last summer for me to realize what a wonderful song "I'm In Love" is. It's so easy going, and the horns sound awesome. My only complaint? It's too short! It needs a second verse and the chorus repeated before the key change... otherwise, I'm In Love with this tune:
My Top 16 songs from the 5/30/81 countdown (only 4 absolute faves in bold): Top 10: Bette Davis Eyes, Being With You, Take It On The Run, Just The Two Of Us, Too Much Time On My Hands #11-20: I Love You, I Missed Again #21-30: You Make My Dreams, Jessie's Girl, The Waiting, Find Your Way Back, The One That You Love #31-40: You Better You Bet, Winning*, I Can't Stand It, Ain't Even Done With The Night * Santana gets my Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. Wonderful guitar work and joyful harmonies here:

Bummer I missed last weekend's '85 show as it includes a lot of great songs. Really strong countdown from top to bottom. Thanks to 80sat40 for posting the extended version of Obsession. A local classic hits station used to play the extended version fairly regularly after their slight format switch a few years back, but they don't play it much anymore.
Looking forward to this week's '86 show. Seems like we've had a lot of '86 this year and that's cool with me. Pass on the '81 show.

George Michael - Careless WhisperAn Austrian extra: Cesár SampsonFor the third time in a row an artist from Upper Austria with a contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest. Cesár Sampson, born in Linz on 8/18/1983, comes from an artist´s household. His mother is a pianist and worked for a long time as a choreographer and singing teacher. His father also works as a choreographer and Pilates teacher. And because the apple doesn´t fall far from the tree even at Sampson, Cesár is something of everything today: singer, musician, producer and vocal coach. And even if you´d suspect the muscle-bound Sampson of boxing, he also follows in his father´s Pilates footsteps. He has a training certificate and passes on the teaching of holistic body training to his students. While children from bourgeois homes can trigger a moderate family earthquake with loud music or neglected homework, rebellion is more difficult in a creative environment. Sampson therefore finds a very special way in his youth to rebel against his parents by wearing suits. At the age of 17 Cesár goes on tour as a singer with the Sofa Surfers and travels the world with them. But even if music - initially as a percussionist, later as a singer and songwriter - is always part of his life, Cesár´s everyday life on tour and on stage eventually becomes too superficial. At the age of 20 it´s no longer enough for him simply to be an artist - he sets out in search of a deeper meaning. For about six years he therefore devoted himself to social work. He works with young people and physically disabled people. Through this activity he finds a new approach to music and his voice over the years. "I´ve always sung well, but with the consciousness and experience I have now, it´s something completely different," he says. His voice is for him the best developed instrument he possesses: Last year Cesár Sampson reached #3 at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon with "Nobody But You":

The band U8 was formed in 1980 in Salzburg and soon gained a considerable fan base in the Mozart city due to a freaked out stage show. In 1981 U8 released their first single. In the fall of 1982 they won a band competition in Germany and played their debut album "Pegasus 1001" on it. After another album in 1984 it became quiet around U8, but the band tried a comeback in 1988 as "U8 - Touch of Fire" with a new line-up and "commercial Bombasto-Rock à la Europe".
Here´s U8 with their biggest hit - from 1983 "Fantasy For Dreamers": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Good call on Rock You Like A Hurricane. I remember it getting a lot of airplay on radio and the video was a staple of MTV in the spring of '84. Part of it's gotta be the stiff competition on pop radio in '84, but overall The Scorpions are one of those acts whose singles' peak positions don't seem to correspond with their popularity.
