[...] I won $103 on KHTR's Morning Mystery Oldie for knowing a very short snippet of "Stuck In The Middle With You". Always have to give a shout out to Hitradio 103 KHTR/St. Louis as that was my station of choice for most of high school and college, plus they featured "American Top 40". [...] I won a sampler CD at Hitradio Ö3 (at that time it was simply called Ö3), in this competition you ("only") had to be one of the ten fastest callers. And once I almost certainly would have won a REO Speedwagon album. In a report about REO Speedwagon´s single "Can´t Fight This Feeling" an error had to be found. Now, the name of the album was mentioned as "Can´t Fight This Feeling". But as an AT40 listener it was immediately clear to me that the REO Speedwagon album was called "Wheels Are Turnin´". By the way: The moderator gave several times the indication that many callers didn´t give the correct answer. Just to add: The best quiz on Hitradio Ö3 (IMO) was played in summer 1997 (The Ö3 triad ... due to Ö3): 3 hits in 3 seconds, only 3 callers per hour were switched into the show, but if somebody could name the three hits, he immediately won 5,000 Austrian Schillings (about 36 €). Usually it took several hours until the puzzle could be solved, because 3 hits in 3 seconds ... but it was very entertaining and just the right thing for a hot summer.

5/3/80 (A):Billy Joel - You May Be Right Jermaine Jackson - Let´s Get Serious Journey - Any Way You Want It The James Last Band - The SeductionThe Pretenders - Brass In Pocket 5/9/87 (B):Huey Lewis & The News - I Know What I Like Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al Peter Wolf - Come As You Are Poison - Talk Dirty To Me Smokey Robinson - Just To See HerCommercial breaks (and more)More than once I´ve mentioned that back in the 80s Ö3 and Blue Danube Radio didn´t play any commercial during the AT40 breaks. But they made some exceptions. Every hour one break was filled with a 7 second spot called "Don´t drink and drive". And sometimes we could listen to information like Barry Manilow´s "Quit smoking - Call American Heart Association" or "Care - Your personal answer to human need" or "A public service of this station, the Smokey Bear Program and The Ad Council" (it would be interesting if these "antique" spots are still available today). And then there was another spot with the follwing words: "... The times we´ve shared together and all the things we´ve done to make our separate souls become as one it´s what we´ve done since we´ve been one it´s what we´ve done since we´ve been one." Well, this sounds like "Especially May is the month with ..." ... and this brings me (directly) to my " love"-edition for this week: 5/3/80 (A):Air Supply - Lost In Love Bette Midler - The Rose Billy Preston & Syreeta - With You I´m Born Again Peaches & Herb - I Pledge My Love To You The Eagles - I Can´t Tell You Why5/9/87 (B):Atlantic Starr - Always Chris De Burgh - The Lady In Red Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms Genesis - In Too Deep Lionel Richie - Se LaAn Austrian extra: Mike Merlin Love feelings in this week´s Austrian extra, too. Already in his childhood Michael Ernst, so Mike Merlin´s real name, had predominantly contact to classical music and began, after he had gotten to know the "pop music", soon to write songs himself. Strongly influenced by the already dissolved "Beatles", he founded a number of bands and won several competitions. First radio and television appearances were the result. He studied singing and piano and he got his first record deal in 1983. He founded a studio, composed various film scores, had a number of releases as a solo artist and achieved various chart positions. He also worked with his wife Andreja on various music projects for Unicef and the SOS Children´s Villages. Various awards, such as the Albert Swiss Order were the result. In 2002 he worked together with the Canadian singer Andre Wright on the pop duo "2Faces". In 1988 Michael Ernst released his song "Tell Me That You Love Me" as Mike Merlin: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

5/7/83:Al Jarreau - Mornin´Barry Manilow - Some Kind Of Friend Bryan Adams - Straight From The HeartCulture Club - Time The Tubes - She´s A Beauty "Sometime the snow comes down ...""... in June." This line from Vanessa Williams´s song "Save The Best For Last", which is supposed to describe the impossible in a love affair, can actually occur. And even though it´s only May and not June yet, it was a bit surprising last weekend to find snow in the city of Salzburg, which usually can be found in January. So, here are five songs that were already in the Top 40 in January 1983 and still were in the Top 40 at the beginning of May 1983, so it´s maybe a " January in May"-edition: 5/7/83:Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton - We´ve Got TonightLionel Richie - You Are Michael Jackson - Billie Jean An Austrian extra: Bobbie SingerThere´s no doubt about it - one of the most important voices of a radio station is the station voice. Bobbie Singer, whose real name is Tina Schosser, was one of the station voices of Ö3. Bobbie studied guitar and piano with the support of her musical family. At the age of 15 she wrote her first own song and got to know a manager during a private performance, who arranged her first record deal in 1996 at the age of 16. Three years later she was selected by the ORF in a multi-stage jury procedure to represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem. And here is Bobbie Singer with "Reflection":
