Favorites from the Top 100 of 1986, Part Two:
Mad About You Venus No One Is To Blame Rock Me Amadeus Sledgehammer Alive And Kicking Never West End Girls I Can't Wait Higher Love Let's Go All The Way What Have You Done For Me Lately Dancing On The Ceiling When I Think Of You Party All The Time That's What Friends Are For There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) Something About You Sara You Give Love A Bad Name
Overall 1986 was a pretty solid year. I preferred the January-August stretch. Late '86 had some good tunes, but I thought there was a noticeable drop in pop music that extended for a year or so.
Kinda conspicuous in their absence are the two Mr. Mister songs which were huge hits. I loved those songs in '86 as well as Is It Love. Maybe they've been overplayed and I just tired of them. Or perhaps they didn't age well. Dunno.

For all snow shovelers, emergency services and all who persevere day and night, but also for all who are still in a little Christmas mood (the Christmas season actually still lasts until Candlemas (2/2)), here is a special " winter"-edition: 1/10/81 (A):Bruce Springsteen - Hungry Heart Dan Fogelberg - Same Old Lang Syne Dolly Parton - 9 to 5 REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving YouThe Police - De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da 1/19/85 (B):Band Aid - Do They Know It´s Christmas ? Duran Duran - The Wild Boys Glenn Frey - The Heat Is On Midnight Star - Operator The Honeydrippers - Sea Of LoveAn Austrian extra: Mojo Blues BandWith a swing into the new year and at the same time into the carnival season, which lasts almost two months this year. The Mojo Blues Band is an Austrian blues band around Erik Trauner, who has dedicated themselves to the Chicago Blues since 1977 in a changing line-up. The name of the band comes from the term mojo, which describes a kind of talisman in Voodoo magic. The role models include Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson and T-Bone Walker. Erik Trauner quotes Muddy Waters, among others: "I´ve got my Mojo working, but it just doesn´t work on you." In spite of the admiration and respect for the countless role models and interpreters of the blues, the Mojo Blues Band is always keen to find and follow their own musical path. Blues should not only be understood as a form of music, but also as an expression of a certain attitude to life. "The point", says Erik Trauner, "is to develop one´s own handwriting. There´s no room for abuse - in the blues, life must speak from you. If you haven´t experienced anything, you can´t tell anything. It´s like wine with us blues musicians. The older we get, the better we get !" The Mojos had always loved the music from Louisiana and with the song "Rosa Lee", which was influenced by Zydeco music, they succeeded in conquering the Austrian charts in 1988: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

The resulting masterpiece, Richenda Antoinette von Winterstein, better known as Dana Gillespie, gave out the first cry on 3/30/1949 in Woking, near London. The young noblewoman subsequently grew up in London and became enthusiastic about composing at an early age. Already at the tender age of 11 Dana wrote her first song. In 1978 Dana came to Vienna to shoot the movie "Blackout in Vienna" (original "Bad Timing") with Art Garfunkel. And this is where she found the blues. From the beginning of the 1980s Dana Gillespie lived for over a decade partly in Vienna, where she collaborated with the Stars of Boogie Woogie, the German boogie pianist Axel Zwingenberger, but above all with the Austrian Mojo Blues Band ( at40fg.proboards.com/post/151812) and the trio of the Austrian pianist Joachim Palden and presented the program "Globe Trotting with Gillespie" on Blue Danube Radio for 11 years. Her time with the Mojo Blues Band, a purist outfit that backed all the American blues musicians visiting Europe, lasted three years. "I lived, slept and breathed blues, because that was all they did. It was a great experience." She also developed her interest in Indian and Arabic music, recording the single "Move Your Body Close To Me", an Indian-influenced song with synthesiser backing. The song became Dana´s biggest hit in Austria. From 1983 here´s Dana Gillespie with "Move Your Body Close To Me": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

I only have time to post my five-star absolute faves this week (sorry!).
From the 1/17/87 countdown: "Walk Like An Egyptian" by The Bangles; "Control" by Janet Jackson; "Land Of Confusion" by Genesis; "All I Wanted" by Kansas*; "Stop To Love" by Luther Vandross; "Nobody's Fool" by Cinderella * "All I Wanted" is a great mid-tempo song. I love the combo of keyboards, violins and guitar in the song:
From the 1/16/71 show: "Black Magic Woman" by Santana*; "Tears Of A Clown" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles; "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" by Chicago; "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin * "Black Magic Woman" has some incredible guitars. I love the full version of the song:
