The Fifth Season
For really die-hard fans of carnival (especially in Carinthia and parts of Styria), the Fifth Season begins exactly on 11/11 at 11:11 am. And why does the carnival begin exactly on 11/11 at 11:11 am ? Since ancient times, the number 11 has been a fool´s number. It was also seen as something special in the Middle Ages: After all, it was one greater than the Ten Commandments. But actually the carnival is only woken up on 11/11, the official hustle and bustle traditionally starts on 1/7. On 11/11 also Saint Martin is commemorated. However, the beginning of carnival and Martin´s Day don´t coincide coincidentally. In the past, a large feast was always served for Martin´s Day. This met well with the carnival, since it stands at the beginning of a 40-day long fasting period. Saint Martin is said to have hidden in a goose house because he didn´t want to become a bishop. But the geese chatter betrayed him. This is one of the reasons why "Martinigansl" is served in Austria today. And the number 11 ? The number 11 is one greater than the number of the Ten Commandments and one smaller than the number of the disciples of Jesus. That´s what they thought in the Middle Ages. And also for this reason the number 11 is regarded as a fool´s number. But now it´s time for my "carnival"-edition:

An Austrian extra: Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung
Carnival atmosphere also in this week´s Austrian extra: The band Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung (short "EAV") was founded in 1977. Countless songs of this band such as "Ba Ba Banküberfall", "Afrika", "Alpenrap" or "An der Copacabana" have almost become hymns. When Klaus Eberhartinger joined the band as frontman in 1981, the success of the EAV began. The band can be described as a group that knows how to entertain the audience with very critical lyrics but funny melodies - a combination whose effect even for the band was often a surprise. The fact that some songs had quite serious backgrounds often went under because the melodies were cheerful and funny and were well received. Tom Spitzer´s lyrics made the EAV so successful and Klaus Eberhartinger embodied the lyrics almost perfectly. The videos mostly cost almost nothing and lived from the funny idea, but nevertheless made for a huge success and the tours were completely sold out. There was also a deliberate contradiction between cabaret, funny melodies and lyrics that are socially critical. In September 2019 the last record "Alles ist erlaubt" ("Everything is allowed") was released, which was also the basis for a farewell tour. A few weeks ago the EAV will be touring the German-speaking world once again to say goodbye to the stage and the fans as the EAV. But that doesn´t mean that the members stop completely, they only stop working as the meanwhile famous band.
In the fall of 1986, the English version "Ba Ba Bankrobbery" entered the British charts and climbed all the way up to #63. A small detail on the sidelines: While the German version contains the English text line "The evil is always and everywhere", the English version contains the German text line "Das Böse ist immer und überall":
From 1986 here is the Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung with "Ba Ba Bankrobbery":

What a passionate tune! Many of her singles underperformed on the chart IMHO.. at least this cracked the Top 30 on Radio & Records: My Top 19 songs from the 11/9/74 countdown:Top 10: You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, Jazzman, Whatever Gets You Through The Night, Tin Man, The B!tch Is Back, Carefree Highway #11-20: Everlasting Love, You Haven't Done Nothin', Longfellow Serenade, I Can Help, Can't Get Enough, Overnight Sensation, When Will I See You Again #21-30: Wishing You Were Here, Angie Baby, Cat's In The Cradle #31-40: You Got The Love*, King Fu Fighting, The Came You * Rufus gets my 70s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week, even though this just missed hitting the Top 10 by peaking at #11. Listening to this song is like waiting for a plane to take off. Hearing the opening guitar is like the plane pulling away from the gate. Then the first verse is like the plane taxing to the runway, and you're anticipating the flight... and then when the second verse starts, it's like the plane has to reset on another runway . But when that guitar solo cranks up... VROOOOOOOOM! Take off! Every time I hear that guitar solo, it's like DAYUM! I don't want this song to end !

11/15/86:Huey Lewis & The News - Hip to be square OMD - Forever live and die Talking Heads - Wild wild life The Human League - HumanWang Chung - Everybody have fun tonight An Austrian extra: Christina StürmerChristina Stürmer´s career began in a bookstore called "Amadeus" in Linz. There she started an apprenticeship as a bookseller directly after her school career. In the fall of 2002, more precisely on 11/4/2002, the ORF started his (new) casting show "Starmania". Two weeks later, on 11/18/2002, Christina Stürmer appeared for the first time at this show. She made it to the final and finished it at #2. On 4/6/2003 Christina Stürmer entered the Austrian charts with the song "Ich lebe" ("I live") directly at #1 and stayed there for 9 consecutive weeks. She recently released her eighth album "Überall zu Hause" ("At home everywhere") and Christina, like Stefanie Werger ( at40fg.proboards.com/post/148859), is committed to equal rights for women. A few weeks ago, for example, she not only signed the women´s referendum held in Austria, but also supported it financially. She also has similar plans for her future life as Stefanie Werger. While Stefanie Werger founded the "Cafe Werger´s" in the Styrian capital Graz, Christina Stürmer wants to open a bookshop with a cafe at some point. And Christina also sings, just like Stefanie Werger, mostly only in German, but in cover versions she also dares to approach the great Janis Joplin. From her "Starmania"-time, here is Christina Stürmer with "Piece of my heart": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

The video for “Land Of Confusion” scared the hell out of me as a kid, now I just think it’s funny, dated but funny. You don’t really think of Genesis as a “political band” but this was pretty scathing of the Reagan administration. I think it still holds up as a great song and video.

^^ I'm a little confused about the last three posts (EDIT: The posts I am making reference to have since been deleted). The title of this thread is Your Favorite Songs from This Weekend's 70s/80s shows. Can we please keep this thread to the songs featured on this weekend's shows?

11/23/85:Aretha Franklin - Who´s zoomin´ who Elton John - Wrap her up Olivia Newton John - Soul kissOMD - So in love Sting - Love is the seventh wave An Austrian extra: Michael TschuggnallAnother look at the first season of the ORF casting show "Starmania": Christina Stürmer reached #2 and only had to admit defeat to Michael Tschuggnall from Telfs in Tirol, who won the final with his song "Tears of happiness". "Tears of happiness", as well as Christina Stürmer´s "Ich lebe", entered the Austrian Charts directly at #1 in 2003. "Tears of happiness" stayed at #1 for two weeks. The interest in the first season of the ORF casting show "Starmania" was enormous. Six million televotings were counted at that time - most of them were given to Michael "Tschuggi" Tschuggnall, at that time the absolute swarm of teenagers. But Michael never wanted to be exactly this swarm of teenagers. And that was certainly one of the reasons why the dream of a pop star didn´t really come true. Today Michael works as a research assistant at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, where he also completed his master´s and doctoral studies with distinction. Are there any current music projects ? "Not really - I still have a few dozen songs on the site, but at the moment I´m busy enough with my two small children. But that doesn´t mean that there won´t be anything in the near or medium term - but that would require a plan (good marketing) and of course the right people who also believe in musical feedback." After all, Michael Tschuggnall has produced at least one entire album. From this album called " Michael Tschuggnall" here´s a song that climbed the Austrian Charts all the way up to #45 in 2003: "Learning how to love you" Finally a very special treat: Michael Tschuggnall (#1) and Christina Stürmer (#2) on the tracks of Roxette´s "The look" (the duet starts at position 0:38):

Was in NYC for the weekend so didn't make the time to listen to the '86 show. Lots of great tunes and a few good ones I rarely hear on 80s stations (Welcome To The Boomtown, The Rain, (Forever) Live And Die, What About Love).
Howard Jones' song is his weakest top 40 hit, imo (lyrics just aren't very inspired). I remember liking it at the time and being surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. I later realized it just wasn't that great.
Similarly, Don't Get Me Wrong is The Pretenders weakest top 40 hit, but the bar's set high with them, just like with Howard. It's still a good listen.
Btw, I saw Toto in concert last month. They put on a great show. I'll Be Over You is, unfortunately, not in the setlist. It's overlooked as a good pop song, imo. I like the line 'As soon as forever is through, I'll be over you'.
Will be back in Florida tomorrow and will definitely tune in for the '85 show.

My Top 28 songs from the 11/27/76 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold): Top 10: Tonight's The Night, The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, Love So Right, The Rubberband Man, Disco Duck, Beth, More Than A Feeling, Nadia's Theme #11-20: Rock 'n' Me, You Are The Woman, Nights Are Forever Without You, You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show), Do You Feel Like We Do, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word #21-30: Love Me, After The Lovin', Fernando, If You Leave Me Now, Don't Fear The Reaper, Hot Line, Livin' Thing, Dazz #31-40: Magic Man, It's A Long Way There*, Play That Funky Music, A Fifth Of Beethoven, She's Gone * "It's A Long Way There" is one of my all-time favorite songs to peak at #28. I'm playing the full version (8:41!) as there's some wonderful guitar work in this tune that gets chopped off the single version. We need more long songs on radio today!
My Top 27 songs from the 11/23/85 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold): Top 10: We Built This City, Broken Wings, Never, Lay Your Hands On Me, Head Over Heels, Miami Vice Theme, Who's Zoomin' Who, Part-Time Lover #11-20: Be Near Me, Party All The Time, Alive & Kicking #21-30: Perfect Way, Say You Say Me, Take On Me, Saving All My Love For You, Small Town, Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves, So In Love*, One Night Love Affair, Tonight She Comes #31-40: Running Up That Hill, Object Of My Desire, Walk Of Life, Burning Heart, Conga, You're A Friend Of Mine, That's What Friends Are For * "So In Love" is one of my all-time favorite songs to peak at #26. It's just about pure pop perfection... cool bass line, percussion that keeps the beat moving nicely, way cool falsetto in the refrain, nice sax... it's a cool tune!
