The 1984 AT40 version of the Hot 100 is phenomenal. If I programmed an 80s radio station, I would be very comfortable playing 98 of the songs featured. Rather than list all of those songs, I'll list the only two songs I wouldn't play:
* "I Still Can't Get Over Loving You" by Ray Parker Jr. It's not a bad song but I just find it unremarkable. It gets little to no airplay today. * "Breakdance" by Irene Cara. If she doesn't spend 6 weeks at #1 with "Flashdance" a year earlier, this song peaks nowhere near #8. This song gets zero airplay today.
Overall, a great year-end countdown!

1984 was a great year in music that's for sure. The reason I didn't put more on my list was that it was already long enough. I could have added 10 or more somgs.

I know there shouldn't be much of a difference in the "creep" factor between it and the song it references, "Every Breath You Take," but that line at the end about "it'll be the last thing you ever do" just takes it over the edge for me. ("EBYT," on the other hand, is so burned on radio that I can't listen to it, either.) I liked "Flashdance," "Fame" and "Out Here on My Own," but Cara's non-movie songs never did anything for me.

An observation and a disclaimer: It looks like we will enjoy this week's 1/22/83 Top 36 (no one has selected #37-#40 yet!). Also, having just worked four 14-hour days in a row, I may be a little pickier than usual with my lists. Given how much I love most of 1983, a Top 20 seems somewhat limited.
