Beginning in 1987 I was fortunate enough to receive every single release on the indie label “Private Music” for about three years. The label was founded by Edgar Froese’s former Tangerine Dream bandmate Peter Baumann. Tangerine Dream itself had a few releases on this label. But by that time their sound was too mainstream new age for my taste. I preferred much more their surreal and progressive ambient sound that I was familiar with, like their regular tracks featured on the radio show “Music from the Hearts of Space” (or their 1974 release ‘Phaedra’, that to this day pushes the limits of atmospheric experimentation). Of course Tangerine Dream and their psych-rock surrealism was there from the beginning: Even their name taken from that most surrealistic of all the verses in “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”… With tangerine trees and marmalade skies….
Fortunately before long they got some of their originality back, thanks to a bigger influence of fiercely anti-pop presence of Edgar Froese. In fact, several of Tangerine Dream’s later works, were solely composed and performed by him. Of such notable works, are a number of ‘series’ credited to Froese. A significant example is one called Atomic Seasons series, which was commissioned by an elderly Japanese businessman who himself was a survivor of the WWII atomic bombing, with two in the series “Winter in Hiroshima” and “The Endless Season” highlighting Edgar Froese’s exceptional visionary talents into other musical forays.
Lastly as we remember his “most recent” life (that started on 6/6/1944, the D-day, and ended a few days ago), a quote of Edgar Froese, on the band’s facebook page, is resurfaced, “There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address”.
