What do you think of those stations when they are playing regular programming?
Do you listen to that station at other times during the week, or do you just use it to record AT40 - The 70s/80s? I know some who post here like to listen to Casey all of the time but for me, hearing Casey for 3 or 4 hours each week keeps that special feeling of the shows. It's like going to your favorite restaurant... if you go there too often, it loses that "feel" that you loved the first few times you enjoyed it.
So... for those of you who listen to your station(s) who play AT40, what is your opinion of the station as a whole, and would you recommend that other listeners should check them out? I thought it would be cool see what people thought of the radio stations that play Casey's shows. This thread is not to talk about how error-free the stations are in playing Casey's shows... this is for their other 164 or 165 hours of weekly programming.
I am well familiar with three stations who play the 70s shows and one who plays the 80s show. I live in Detroit, commute frequently to Toledo and Cleveland, and used to live in St. Louis so I will comment on AT40 stations in those areas. Here are my "reviews" of the stations:
CKWW/AM 580 Detroit/Windsor - website: www.am580radio.com/
This station plays the 70s show on Sunday evenings. If you like a station which isn't afraid to play songs that didn't hit the Top 10, you will like this station. They play a very good variety of the classics as well as some obscure picks. They also throw in a song or two from some Canadian artists. Their range of years can go as far back as the late 50s right up to the MTV era of 1981 but they concentrate on the 1964 - 1979 era. Cool "old school" sounding jingles, and if you are ever in the Detroit, Toledo or Windsor areas, you can pick up their AM signal in your car... it can sound awesome to hear the tunes the way they sounded then. Worth a listen.
WMJI/105.7 FM Cleveland - website: www.wmji.com/main.html
This station plays the 70s show on Sunday mornings. Has a somewhat tight playlist but a good number of songs which hit the Top 10 are played (example, many oldies stations may only play "Midnight Train To Georgia" by Gladys Knight & The Pips but this station plays many of their hits). I like hearing Don "Action" Jackson's Top 6 at 6 as he takes a year in history, an artist's Top 6 songs, or other themes for his countdown. This station used to have fantastic weekend programming which would include themes like a #2 Weekend (two #2 songs at the top and bottom of the hour) but they don't do as many themed weekends as they used to. Playlist ranges from 1964 to about 1988 or so. Worth a listen.
WRQN 93.5 FM Toledo/Bowling Green - website: www.935wrqn.com/
This station plays the 70s show on Sunday mornings and again at midnight. The station has a mostly 70s playlist but will play a couple of 60s tunes each hour as well as a few 80s tunes. They play their share of big hits but aren't afraid to play other Top 10 songs which aren't as popular. I forget the name of the DJ but the guy who is on Sunday afternoons after AT40 - The 70s has a really cool, deep voice... the kind of voice you don't hear on Top 40 stations today. The station playlist doesn't feature many ballads so if you like a lot of up-tempo or some rock or R&B from that era, this is a good station for you. Worth a listen.
KLOU 103.3 FM/St. Louis - website: www.klou.com/main.html
This station now plays the 80s shows on Sunday mornings (played the 70s shows until late last year). If you like hearing the same artists over and over, you will like this station. If you like hearing the same 250 or so songs over and over, this station is for you. If you like any kind of variety outside of that, then you won't like this station. This is about as safe as an oldies station can get. Boring DJs (whose weekday snippets get aired on the weekends), and probably 40 - 50% of the songs they play are former #1 songs. They recently expanded their very tight playlist to include songs through 1987 or so but they are still very repetitive... there are only so many times I want to hear "Baby I Love Your Way" or "Rich Girl". I moved from St. Louis last year, and I don's miss KLOU at all. There are better stations to try.
Are there any stations which feature AT 40 - The 70s or 80s that you recommend (or not), and why?
