As you know, some years AT40 chose to do their own year-end rankings using data from BB and other years used BB’s year end ranking. It has come up what AT40’s ranking would look like if AT40 did their own ranking in the years they used BB. Over the next few week, I will post my best guess as to what the year-end countdown would have been if AT40 compiled their own year-end surveys for the 1970s and 1980s.
This is the first installment, 1970. I used the same methodology AT40 used when they compiled their own survey in 1972. The survey period runs from 1/3/70 to 11/28/70. The difference between this ranking and BB’s is records are credited for their entire chart run if they were on the weekly chart prior to 1/3/70. Records had to be ascending on 1/3/70 to be eligible. 11/28/70 was the cut off. For each week on the chart during the survey period, points were awarded as follows: 200 points for #1, 99 points for #2, 98 points for #3 down to 1 point for #100.
Points (* indicates a #1 song) POS-TITLE-Artist (Peak Position-Peak Month) 2194 *1 RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN' ON MY HEAD B. J. Your survey period should actually start from 11/29/69, since that was the first week the Billboard Hot 100 counted both sides of a single as one entry.

And if it had been that survey period, those #1 songs from December 1969 would be in the survey. It always bothered me that none of those songs appeared in the Billboard listing. At least with this list, "Whole Lotta Love" makes the list. Really too bad that Zep's biggest hit and only top 10 still did not appear on a year end listing. Now I see that a November song or 2 like 100 Proof Aged in Soul made this listing. So why is "I Think I Love You" not on it when it hit #1 meaning it had the cutoff like 100 Proof but had bonus points too. Interesting that a #2 hit with no cutoff, "Vehicle" still barely makes the survey. Thanks for sharing. vince is the man when it comes to year end surveys.

The reason I did not include December 1969 was I was trying to do a countdown that was what AT40 may have done at the time. I used the same parameters AT40 did when they compiled their year-end countdown for 1972, which started the 1st week of January. "Family Affair" was not included AT40's 1972 YE countdown, just as "Leaving On a Jet Plane" or "Someday We'll Be Together" did not make this one. The cut off was the last week of November, which did not give "I Think I Love You" or "Tears of The Clown" time to accumulate enough points. It was not until 1973 that AT40 started crediting records peaking in December of the previous year.

Here is 1971. Once again I used the same methodology and parameters as AT40 did to compile their 1972 YE show. Records at their peak position on or after 1/2/71 are credited for their full chart run through the cut off at 11/27/71.

I was wondering as I read through whether "Sweet Mary" would make it in. Despite debuting on AT40 at 15, it peaked less than 10 notches higher at 7 and had a very short stint in the top 40 for a top 10 record. So both that and "Theme From Shaft" that was a #1 hit at the end of teh survey period squeeze into the survey.

Hey Vince what happens to the points for the songs in the month of December for YE 70 & 71??? Records that peaked in January or later are credited for their points during the previous year's December since the whole chart run is counted. Records that peak in late November or December are generally screwed as they don't have enough points to rank in the current year and are not eligible for the following year.

Yeah, I know AT40 did their own ranking in 1972 and we all know what it was. What I am presenting here is one that corrects some mathematical errors in their original ranking. What is also new is positions #81 to #100. AT40 only did a top 80.

Records that peaked in January or later are credited for their points during the previous year's December since the whole chart run is counted. Records that peak in late November or December are generally screwed as they don't have enough points to rank in the current year and are not eligible for the following year. So why don't you include those records in that window in the following year? That way every hit appears on some list. These are your revisions, aren't they?

Records that peaked in January or later are credited for their points during the previous year's December since the whole chart run is counted. Records that peak in late November or December are generally screwed as they don't have enough points to rank in the current year and are not eligible for the following year. So why don't you include those records in that window in the following year? That way every hit appears on some list. These are your revisions, aren't they? I am thinking of doing a second version of this or some type of revised countdowns that would include the records late in the year that are affected by cut offs. The countdowns I am posting now are my estimate of what AT40 would have done at the time had they calculated their own countdown and they are not meant as a correction of AT40's or BB's countdowns. The early 1970's countdowns are based on how AT40 compiled their 1972 countdown with the survey period starting the 1st week of January. AT40 started crediting records that peaked in the previous year's December in 1973.

Here is 1973. The top 40 is exactly what AT40 tabulated as they did their own thing that year. Since AT40 only did a top 40 in 1973, I added positions #41 to #100 using AT40’s methodology. This is the first year records peaking in December of the previous year were included. AT40’s survey period for 1973 ran from 12/16/72 to 12/8/73. Records ascending on 12/16/72 or later are credited for their full chart run and no credit was given after 12/8/73. 2146 *1 TIE A YELLOW RIBBON 'ROUND THE OLD OAK TREE Tony Orlando And Dawn (#1, April) 2030 2 WHY ME Kris Kristofferson (#16, Nov) 1852 *3 BAD BAD LEROY BROWN Jim Croce (#1, July) 1848 *4 KILLING ME SOFTLY WITH HIS SONG Roberta Flack (#1, Feb) 1846 *5 LET'S GET IT ON Marvin Gaye (#1, Sept) 1831 *6 MY LOVE Paul McCartney & Wings (#1, June) 1716 *7 CROCODILE ROCK Elton John (#1, Feb) 1709 *8 WILL IT GO 'ROUND IN CIRCLES Billy Preston (#1, July) 1701 *9 YOU'RE SO VAIN Carly Simon (#1, Jan) 1688 *10 TOUCH ME IN THE MORNING Diana Ross (#1, Aug) 1633 *11 ME AND MRS. "Top of the World" hit #1 after "Photograph" but only the Carpenters hit makes the survey. For the third time in 4 years, a #2 hit is in the 90s. And nothing that peaked in the 20s made this survey as happened the previous 3 years.

It is just the way it turned out with nothing peaking in the 20s making the survey.

This is my estimate as to what AT40 would have come up with if they did their own survey for 1974. It follows the same methodology and parameters that were used for 1973. The survey period is 12/15/73 to 12/7/74. Records ascending on 12/15/73 or later are credited for their full chart run up to the 12/7/74 cut off. 1999 *1 THE WAY WE WERE Barbra Streisand (#1, Feb) 1850 *2 THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL Charlie Rich
