Hearing this weekend's 70s show from 11/25/78, Chicago was on their way to peaking at #14 with "Alive Again". Their next hit, "No Tell Lover", also peaked at #14. That's a pretty rare occurrence for consecutive songs to peak at the same chart position outside of the Top 10. Many artists have had consecutive #1 songs or #2 hits but it's not often an artist even does that outside of the Top 2... or is it?
Chicago did the same thing in '84 and '85 when "Hard Habit To Break" and "You're The Inspiration" peaked at #3.
Madonna peaked at #5 with both "Angel" and "Dress You Up" in '85.
The Police peaked at #10 in the early 80s with "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me".
Rod Stewart had two consecutive #5 peaks in the early 80s with "Passion" and "Young Turks" even though they were from different albums (another song called "Somebody Special" was released after "Passion" but it only peaked at #71).
What are some other examples of one artist having back to back AT40 hits peak at the same position outside of the Top 2? I wonder what the lowest charting peak is... did any artist have two consecutive songs peak at #40?

Phil Collins hit #19 with "I Missed Again" and "In The Air Tonight" in 1981.
Foreigner hit #26 with "Juke Box Hero" and "Break It Up" in 1982.
Journey hit #23 with "After The Fall" and "Send Her My Love" in 1983.
Van Halen did this twice, #13 with "I'll Wait" and "Panama" in 1984, then #22 with "Dreams" and "Love Walks In" in 1986.

freakflybry... I heard "Break It Up" by Foreigner yesterday on the iHeart AT40 channel (7/10/82), and it didn't phase me that Foreigner had BIU and JBH peak at #26. D'oh! Those other example of peaks outside the Top 10 are great.
From the 70's... Al Green did this twice with #3 peaks for "I'm Still In Love With You" and "You Ought To Be With Me", and #10 peaks for "Call Me" and "Here I Am".

bobbo just listed one of these songs in the thread he just started. Meatloaf peaked at 39 with "Paradise by teh Dashboard Light" and "You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth" back to back. Second and third singles from his 'Bat out of Hell' Lp.

Huey Lewis & The News had 3. If This Is It, The Heart of Rock & Roll & I Want a New Drug all peaked @ #6 in 1984.

Anne Murray reached #12 with 1979's "Broken Hearted Me" and reached the same position a few months later with "Daydream Believer." Three years later, Elton John reached #12 with "Blue Eyes" and the same position (I believe) with "I'm Still Standing." Scandal had back-to-back #41 songs, but #41 is outside the top-40 parameters. I recall a Chartbeat column about back-to-back #41 singles.

Air Supply had three straight hits peak at #5 ("Here I Am," "Sweet Dreams," and "Even the Nights Are Better"), immediately followed by two straight #38s ("Young Love" and "Two Less Lonely People in the World").
Journey had two straight #23 hits ("After the Fall" and "Send Her My Love"), as well as two straight #17s ("Suzanne" and "Girl Can't Help It").

Dr. Hook reached #6 with "Sharing the Night Together" (a song I heard last night in this week's '70s countdown. Their next top-40 hit, "When You're In Love with a Beautiful Woman," also reached #6. They did have a single in between, "All the Time in the World," which missed the top 40. Strangely enough, all six of their top-10 pop hits peaked at either #5 or #6.

Great question, with great answers. In 1987, didn't Richard Marx and Debbie Gibson both have their first two hits peak at the same position (#3 for Marx, #4 for Gibson), then their next hit went up one notch (Marx #2, Gibson #3), then their fourth hit land both of them at the #1 slot ("Hold On To The Nights" and "Foolish Beat")? I always thought that was kind of neat.

This is really obscure for non-Chicagoans, but the Cryan Shames had 5 Hot 100 singles during the 60s. Three of the five peaked at #85, including 2 in a row ("Up On The Roof", "It Could Be We're In Love"). "I Wanna Meet You" also peaked at #85.

... did any artist have two consecutive songs peak at #40? Bette Midler "Friends" & "Married Men" were consecutive Top 40 singles that peaked @ #40 despite being over 5 years apart. |

I always thought it was interesting that the Little River Band had 5 consecutive top 40 hits peak at #s 10, 6, 10, 6, and 10. There was a #51 single in the middle, but that top 40 run was interesting. It was broken when the next potential #6 song topped out at #14.
