We have a couple of threads where people have mentioned their favorite songs to peak outside of the Top 10 or Top 20, but it might be fun to pick the most famous song to peak at a particular chart position on AT40. With so many songs peaking in the Top 10, it might be best to select songs which peaked between #11 and #40. This could be based on airplay today, or other reasons.
The website FiveThirtyEight had an article which recently listed the top 25 songs played on classic rock stations. Some interesting selections from the Casey/Shadoe era:
#11 peak for both "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas and "Rock & Roll All Night" by KISS
#16 peak for "Renegade" by Styx
#35 peak for both "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC and "Crazy On You" by Heart
#36 peak for "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith
#38 peak for "Peace Of Mind" by Boston
I'd nominate "Carry On Wayward Son" for a most famous song to peak at #11. #35 is a tough one as "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO is also famous along with Heart and AC/DC. I would pick "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" by Journey over Styx at #16 but there may be other songs which peaked at #16 which aren't coming to mind right now. Aerosmith and Boston would be good picks for #36 and #38 respectively.
Two others I would nominate for most famous at their peak positions:
#23: "Born To Run" by Bruce Springsteen
#24: "Piano Man" by Billy Joel
I heard "Dude Looks Like A Lady" by Aerosmith driving home from work today, and at the time, I wondered if that might be the most famous song to peak at #14. The only other song I could think of is "Whip It" by Devo. I am sure there are others.

Does anyone have a good place to look up peak positions? You can go to top40db.net (sign in or register if you're not a member) and do a custom search (by clicking on other searches), selecting a peak position, limiting the year range, and selecting a chart (hot 100). It will give you a list of hot 100 songs that peaked at that position. |

I looked up the Gramble website previously mentioned... it lists all songs and peaks for each year... pretty exhaustive although occasionally a hit is listed in the wrong year. Here are some possible 80s picks not yet mentioned:
#13: "Shadows Of The Night" by Pat Benetar
#15: either "The Breakup Song" by The Greg Kihn Band or "Cuts Like A Knife" by Bryan Adams
#16: either "Super Freak" by Rick James or "Think I'm In Love" by Eddie Money
