Doing a Google search, I've come upon references that Rick Dees was fired from WMPS on 9/13/76. He was then hired by WHBQ after a 45 day non-compete clause ran its course. So, knowing they were going to hire Rick Dees, it would seem that WHBQ had no problem adding Disco Duck to the rotation. Rick stayed at WHBQ until 1979 when he went to KHJ in L.A. That's good stuff. I would assume other stations in Memphis, including WMPS, did not play it. But it would seem that with your and jmack's information that it did finally get airplay in Memphis just before it hit the top. Good job! I also looked at Billboard editions from 10/30 and it still held its bullet two weeks after dropping from the top spot. I couldn't find the Hot 100 on 11/6/76, but it did not have a bullet on 11/13/76. That really is amazing that the song was able to hold a bullet for two weeks after dropping from its peak position. I can't think of too many songs, if any, that have ever done that.

Another 1976 smash which stayed at #2 for a few weeks after falling out of the #1 slot was 'I Write The Songs', while 'Theme From Mahogany', 'Love Rollercoaster' and 'Convoy' all followed it to #1 (not sure about the order).

"Convoy" did not follow Barry to #1, it was the song that preceded it to the top. BTW, having heard the 12/20/75 ACC show the other day, I can tell you that Don Bowman said the 12-1 climb to the top for "Convoy" was unprecedented on the country chart.

Perhaps if Disco Duck had been played in Memphis, Chicago would have waited until 1982 for their first #1 song. Or a Butterfly Effect on All Things Chicago if they hadn't hit #1 in 1976. Maybe then Cetera leaves the group and then never meets Grant who then never meets Gill who stays married to his first wife. All because of Disco Duck. Who knew? Or - maybe if Disco Duck had been #1 for a month the Disco Backlash would have started before Saturday Night Fever came out. Travolta stays on Welcome Back Kotter - no Pulp Fiction - no Grease - no Xanadu - no Physical - and Foreigner is #1 for 10 weeks. And there is no We Are Family so the 1979 Pirates use Just When I Needed You Most as their fight song and finish 6th. That cracked me up! Especially the Randy VanWarmer reference, God rest his soul. Just when my thoughts were turning to the 40th anniversary of "Disco Duck" making it to #1.
