I thought of creating this thread when I heard "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" earlier today. When I hear a song, I think the artist with the label credit is the one that did the singing, but there's a lot of acts that had guest singers or acts who remixed other artists' songs and got the label credit instead.
For example:
* "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" - Credited to Elvin Bishop, but Mickey Thomas did the singing. * "Wake Me Up" - Credited to Avicii, sung by Aloe Blacc. * All the hits of Milli Vanilli.
Plus, there were also acts who recorded songs but they were released under another artist's name (such as "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" - recorded by The Starlets, credited to The Blue-Belles).

Would "Just The Two Of Us" by Grover Washington Jr count? Grover played sax in the song, but Bill Withers sang the vocals. Bill didn't receive label credit (according to UMD Music).

As far as I know Mickey Thomas was a member of Elvin Bishop's band at the time. A similar case is "Free Ride" by Edgar Winter Group where the singer and writer is Dan Hartman, who would later have his own hits.

Many jazz sings go that route, I think. "Is it you?" was just credited to Lee ritenour when Eric tagg was the singer (tagg was listed as a songwriter though).
Another one I find interesting is "what are we doin in love?" Was credited only to Dottie west though it is very obvious that Kenny Rogers is there as a duet partner. they were both on liberty records, so I can't really see any conflicts between labels that usually stop someone from being credited.

Martha Wash comes to mind: she was the uncredited vocalist on early-1990s hits by Black Box ("Everybody Everybody" and "Strike It Up"); Seduction (I believe it was "Two to Make It Right"); and C+C Music Factory ("Gonna Make You Sweat" and "Here We Go"), and the ubiquitous miss "It's Raining Men," by The Weather Girls.

From the sixties & seventies:
Dave Clark Five - Mike Smith, lead singer Spencer Davis Group - Steve Winwood, lead singer Manfred Mann - Paul Jones, Mike D'Abo, lead singers Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Chris Thompson, lead singer Santana - Yes Carlos did do some singing. But other lead singers include Greg Rolie, Greg Walker, Leon Patillo, and Alex Ligertwood among others

I was thinking about songs where the singer wasn't in the group (I guess my example with Elvin Bishop was a bad one, since Mickey Thomas was in Bishop's band). I once created a thread for groups named after someone who wasn't lead singer: at40fg.proboards.com/thread/4040/bands-named-after-member-singer

"Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" by Jim Steinman... I believe the vocalist on that 1981 hit was actually Rory Dodd (who was also the "turn around bright eyes" guy on "Total Eclipse of the Heart").

AFAIK, Ted Nugent was not the vocalist on "Cat Scratch Fever." I believe it was sung by the rhythm guitarist in his band, so this may not qualify for this thread either. He did not receive credit on the label.

I did find two that posters might not come across:
"Respect Yourself" by Bruce Willis does not credit the additional vocal by June Pointer.
"Indestructible" by the Four Tops does not credit the additional vocal by Smokey Robinson.

Are you talking about someone like Lenny Zakatek who sang lead on "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" and "Games People Play" for the Alan Parsons Project? Alan was the producer.
