With Survivor lead singer Jami Jamison's sudden, awful passing this week, it got me thinking: How many group had two different lead singers, at different times, that were able to pull of what Survivor did. One lead singer,Dave Bickler, sang on the biggest hit of Survivor's career, "Eye Of The Tiger". However, the other lead singer, Jamison, was on lead during the time that Survivor had their most Top 40 hits. That's a pretty distinctive mark I would think: one singer sang on the biggest hit with another one singing on the most hits.
Any other group fits that description? I can only think of one: Van Halen. But I'm sure there are a few more out there.

Maybe Deep Purple. Two of their three top 40 entries were with original singer Rod Evans while Ian Gillan sang on their best known song and only original to reach the top 40, "Smoke On The Water."

Chicago: Not quite, but close. Peter Cetera sang lead on two of their three #1 singles, while his replacement, Jason Scheff, sang lead on the third ("Look Away"). Personally, I think many of their best songs were sung by the late Terry Kath, but none of them hit #1.

I believe it was another latter day addition to Chicago, Bill Champlin, who sang lead on "Look Away."
Another one that is close: I think Pat Simmons's only lead vocal on a Doobie Brothers hit was on one of their two #1s, "Black Water."

Not quite the same, but close: Ann Wilson sang lead on most of Heart's hits, but they didn't hit #1 until Nancy Wilson sang " These Dreams". However, Ann sang "Alone", also a #1 and ultimately a bit bigger chartwise.

38 Special is the best example I can come up with. Most of their hits have Donnie Van Zant on lead vocals, but their biggest hit "Second Chance" was sung by Max Carl.

Recall the Doobie Brothers started with Tom Johnston as lead singer, then he was eventually permanently replaced by Michael McDonald, who was credited with their 1979 #1 hit "What a Fool Believes".

The Cars fit this description. Benjamin Orr sang lead on their biggest hit "Drive" while Ric Ocasek sang lead on all their other biggest hits and is the face of the group.

From the CD booklet: "The latter album ["Chicago 19"] was certified platinum following the success of "Look Away," a Scheff-sung power ballad from the pen of '80s hit machine Diane Warren, with Albert Hammond". I do not have the "19" LP/CD, so I do not know who is credited with the vocal on that album's notes.

Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship could be considered here. While Grace Slick sang lead vocal throughout most of the group's time, Marty Balin sang lead through the first decade of hitting the chart while Mickey Thomas took over in the late 70s. Interesting that during the Marty Balin years of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship, the group had four Top 10 songs and six Top 15 songs. With Mickey Thomas singing as part of Jefferson Starship and Starship, the group had 4 Top 10 songs and 6 Top 15 songs (but more Top 40 hits). It wasn't until Paul Kantner, one of the founding members, left the group in 1985 did the group enjoy its biggest success, scoring three #1 songs from 1985 - 1987. Mickey Thomas wins the chart battle on the singles chart but Marty Balin and company did very well on the album chart.
