By the time American Top 40 resumed, the chart was based on R&R, not Billboard Hot 100. Besides, there were many songs that did not make the chart that should have (i.e. "MMMBop" and "Missing", the latter of which was the top song of 1996) and most of the songs below #25 were from before the PPW started (and no pre-PPW songs were ranked above #25) True, PPW songs generally stayed on the chart for longer, but they should have gone with some sort of artificial weighting system in order to fairly rank the songs from before 1994. "Dreamlover", for instance, would have gotten a significant boost that way; would definitely have ranked in the Top Ten, maybe even in the Top Five. "Iris" should have ranked a spot or two higher. Even though it didn't spend anywhere near as long as the top, as the songs above it, it outdid those songs in terms of weeks in the Top Ten and Top 40.
As for "Another Day In Paradise", that was more of a 1980s song. Of course, it did not rank on the 1980s list, since it came along too late in the decade - and its #1 weeks spilled over into 1990s. The chart might have been compiled before "Another Day In Paradise" even debuted.

At least in the version I listened to a few months back "Missing" was an extra, identified as the #1 song of 1996 overlooked by AT40 staffers.
Macarena and Candle In the Wind each were huge Hot 100 hits but the impact on the radio charts wasn't the same.

All those folks who said they loved the Henhouse 5 Plus 2 are certainly getting their share of it from iHeart this month

Candle '97 peaked at #32 on the R&R chart, so it wouldn't be in contention for top 40 of the decade. Macarena topped out at #10, so it probably should've been below the top 40 too. (Based solely on R&R CHR/Pop, which is what revived AT40/CT40 used).

How can "Candle '97" spend - what? - 14 weeks or something like that at number one in Billboard Magazine yet only reach 32 in R&R?

They had already stopped using the Billboard charts by then. Otherwise, Candle in the Wind '97 would definitely be #1.

Then Candle in The Wind wasn't #1 for Billboard's 90s chart either

Part 2 of the top 80 of 1970 just starting (although going by the comments on the iHeart feed page, there was a segment from the show already aired during the preceding show from march 20th,1982 )

As we all know, the Hot 100 combined sales and airplay, while R&R was an airplay only chart. You could probably make the assumption that there was a huge surge in the sales of "Candle '97" in the aftermath of Princess Di's death, as many saddened folks felt moved by the song and went out and bought it. Meanwhile, it did get a fair amount of airplay, but maybe not a disproportionately large amount as it did in sales.

"Candle In The Wind 1997" was the top-selling single of the '90s, so that's probably why they included it.

"Candle" only peaked at #21 on Hot 100 Airplay (its flip side "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" was the bigger radio hit). The 11+ million singles sold (and the fact that both sides' combined airplay was factored in) is what made it such a huge overall hit on the Hot 100.

After the conclusion of Top 50 hits of 1986, Iheart channel has just started playing the “Number Ones of the 70s, Pt. 1” bonus special but starting with 1970’s “I’ll Be There” by the Jackson Five about 10 minutes ago.
