Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a popular boxer who spent nearly 20 years in a New Jersey prison before being cleared of three murders of which he was rather-cheesily convicted thanks to racist prosecutors, died today (4/20) at his home in Toronto, Canada, after a bout with prostate cancer. He was 76. He had been involved there with building an organization devoted to helping others wrongly convicted of major crimes. Bob Dylan got as high as #33 on American Top 40 in 1976 with a song about Carter's plight, which appeared on his album Desire. Here's the full 9-minute-or-so version, - cut down to 4-something by pop radio never mind AT40 - and the unexpurgated lyrics from Bob.dL

Actor Denzel Washington starred in a 1999 biographical film, directed by Norman Jewison, about Carter's ordeals.
