CVD hosted June 14, not the 21st. Ah. I made that comment without double-checking. I knew it was one of those two weeks. Thanks for the correction.

AT20 Hot AC Top 60 of 2003. I followed the charts religiously back then, and it seems like "just the other day" rather than almost 12 years. It's also so interesting to jear how much the format has changed in 12 years. Hot AC from 12-15 years ago parallels what is now Soft AC, and Hot AC, which was originally designed to distance itself from CHR and still be more hip than the Soft AC "elevator music" is closer to CHR than it ever has been.

Yes it is hard to tell a HOT AC station and a regular AC station apart. The closest description I can come up with is Hot AC = CHR without the rap.

Pretty much, although songs that chart Top 5 on HAC today the format never would have touched 15 years ago. Case in point, Rock Your Body by Justin Timberlake was 59 and had never hit the Top 20. (It was a number one on the pop chart) - today it would have easily been Top 5 HAC

In that case, I don't see the point of having a "Hot AC" format anymore, just call it CHR for what it is. Oh, BTW, I'll be listening to 8-5-89 this week along with the regular Premiere 80s offering. That countdown featured the first time in over 5 years that movie soundtracks held the top two positions.

It's the AT40 with Shadoe from 8/4/90, up to 31 and "Pure" by The Lightning Seeds. I liked that song, and it's great hearing it in this countdown. I'd say that "Enjoy the Silence" by DM (number 20 that week) is one of my top-five songs of the entire decade of the 1990s.

AT40 from 8/1/87. Casey told a story about how the Whispers got their sound from a Hertz commercial because of the harmonies. Then he said they had been waiting to tell that story for 6 years because thier previous AT40 hit "It's a Love Thing" fell out before they could tell the story. I am sure that has happened several times. There are several stories told during the last week that a song is on AT40. It always intrigued me that they would wait until the last minute like that. But they were probably getting these stories all along and sometimes it was toward the end or just after a song's top 40 chart run.
Funny how Casey handles "I Want Your Sex". Before playing that, he said there are 6 songs from movies in the countdown and proceeds to mention their titles and artists. He says there are three songs from BEVERLY HILLS COP 2 and gives the title of Bananarama's song, then says later we will hear Bob Seger and now is George Michael. So he omitted two titles to make it a little less obvious that he skipped this title.

However, ten years ago CHR was in a very urban, R&B and rap phase. Hot AC was sort of a format that sounded like CHR of the 80s. Who knows if the ebbs and flows will ever create a separation like that again though. There are still enough subtle differences to make the formats distinguishable.

That entire Depeche Mode album (Violator) was and is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Pretty much every song on it was fantastic except for maybe the last track, which was still decent. I wore that CD out my last couple years of high school...
