AT40 from October 28, 1978. Now on, the highest debut at #32, "Straight On" by Heart.

My rare foray into the early 1970s right now with 10/23/71. I just heard the week's second-highest debut, coming in at number 20, "Imagine" by John Lennon. Now playing is number 19, The Fifth Dimension with "Never My Love". A great song, I think, by a pretty great group. The week's highest debut: Number nine, "Theme from 'Shaft'", Isaac Hayes.
However, there are two songs by performers named Osmond in the countdown, so it can't be all that good. And it isn't.
Later, I'll be doing 10/22/88.

^Even though I am hearing a show from 22 years later, I just heard a song that was played on that 1971 show..."Reason to Believe". It's the MTV Unplugged version that Rod released on the CT40 from 10/23/93. Of course I heard that 1988 show yesterday. Biggest disappointment there was when Shadoe said one of the droppers was "Superstitious". Should have been a top 10 hit like they had twice the previous year and still been on the countdown as a result.

And now onto 10/22/88. Leading off is one of my favorite one-hit wonders, "The Promise" by When in Rome. The number one song of 1989 continues its climb toward the top spot, "Look Away" by Chicago. Meanwhile, we hear great tunes from Duran Duran, Erasure and INXS en route to the week's chart-topper, "A Groovy Kind of Love", one of my personal favorites by Phil Collins.

Listening to 11/2/74 right now--solid first hour on this show with notable debuts from Harry Chapin ("Cat's In the Cradle") and Rufus ("You Got the Love"), a big mover from Chicago ("Wishing You Were Here" - one of my faves of their early 70s catalog), and one of the stranger plunges by a song that had just been #1. Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing" falls to #39--just two weeks removed from being #1! It fell from 1 to 15 to 39...which prompts the question: how does a song that was popular enough to be #1 one week, get passed by 38 other songs two weeks later? And unless there's something I don't know, this isn't a case like "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha Ha!!" -- just a normal and quite likeable song...so why the quick fall from #1?

The strange plunges of number one songs from late 1974 has been kicked around on here a few times, matt. I think the consensus was that there was some kind of chart anomaly taking place then - whether it be chicanery or otherwise. I'm sure somebody with greater knowledge of this phenomenon could weigh in and provide better detail.

I have posted about this 2 or 3 times. A Billboard article in late 1974 attributed it to a recession that caused record stores to take older hits off the shelves quicker than they had been doing. BTW, while there is no article that I came across to confirm it, 1982's big chart crops may fall under the same reasoning. Because there was also a recession going on in 1982.

Just began 10/31/87. I'm skipping the logical choice for today, 10/24/87, as it was guest-hosted by CVD. No offence to Charlie, I just want to hear Casey today.
The number one song of 1988 debuts in this countdown, George Michael's "Faith". Which, as it turns out, was edited on the actual broadcast of the show. Unreal.

I AM going with a show from today's date, from the previous year that October 24 was a chart date, 1981. Casey just did another story involving the World Series. Talked about how Jose Feliciano's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner offended many people and played a piece of the live recording from one of those games. Also said that the Detroit Tigers lost 3 of the first 4 games to the St. Louis Cardinals and then 'miraculously won the last 3 games to win the championship'. That's Casey's favorite MLB team for those that do not know. Don't remember him ever finding a way to mention the Tigers winning it all again in 1984. Not so dramatic that time of course.

Just began 10/27/79. "Rise" by Herb Alpert is number one for a second week. Love that song.
