Listening to 9/8/84 - at #14--one of my least favorite 1984 top 40 songs from Peabo Bryson. Casey introed this song with the story about Peabo being a ladies man. The other clunker in this show is the Diana Ross/Julio Iglesias cut. Otherwise, a ton of great songs in this show.
A few highlights so far: -The first seven songs (maybe except for "Sexy Girl") were all fantastic--including good lost hits from Spandau Ballet and the Fixx -Fun stories on the intros to "Dynamite" and "I Can Dream About You" (though both songs were edited--boo hiss) -The LDD...the letter was real good--an inspiring story from the kid who was a runner and had to come back from injury. However, the choice of song did not fit the LDD--and I'm thinking "Looks Like We Made It" was chosen for at least one other LDD where the choice appeared to be about the song's title, and the requester did not seem to pay close attention to the lyrics. I wonder if Barry had any idea of the confusion that would be created by this song...

9/27/75... Great stories about Elvis and Michael (Martin) Murphey... sounds like they tried to fix the slowing-down issue with the Spinners record, with could-be-better results... dL

Listening to 9/24/77 -- at #19 with "Brick House". Some thoughts so far:
-First hour was pretty hit or miss (the misses including Ronnie McDowell's dreadful "The King Is Gone"), but the second hour has been terrific. A number of good songs that started with Paul Nicolas' "Heaven on the 7th Floor" - a song that was a favorite of mine and my sister's when we were kids. -Great intros to "Smoke From a Distant Fire" (Sanford and Townsend grabbing the same bag of soda bottles to turn in for money to eat while they were struggling to make it) and "Higher and Higher" - I didn't realize until I heard this that Booker T Jones was responsible for the slower soulful ballad arrangement that Rita Coolidge's version used. -The theme from Star Wars falls 26 notches! And after it was at its peak position. I always wonder what prompted some of those plunges for certain songs... -On the flip side of that, Debby Boone jumps 14 notches on her way to that incredible run at #1. Still not sure how that song was that popular...

The station I tuned in for the '70s AT40 was wrapping up the '80s countdown--then went to the second hour of the '70s program--it was an interesting transition--from Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Lost In Emotion" (from my mid-20s) to Bobby Goldsboro's "Summer (The First Time)" and 6th grade. I am now hearing Helen Reddy's "Delta Dawn," which accidentally mentioned the age of the song (41 years)--a 41-year-old song that mentioned a (then) 41-year-old woman. If Dawn is still alive, that would make her 82 (though the song, I believe, was written a year or two before for country star Tanya Tucker).

Did an all day Casey marathon yesterday
AT40 12/31/83 (Top 100 of 1983) CT40 11/22/97 AT40 9/14/85 (Snuggles) AT20 9/20/08
One thing i never noticed was the song after "Shannon" on 9/14/85 is Only Human by Billy Joel, in a way giving Casey a "pass" on his outburst

AT40 from October 19, 1974. It was hilarious to hear Casey say "The B*tch Is Back".

Listening to 10/3/81--about half way through. As is so typical with 1981 shows, the bottom hour or half of the countdown is where the highest percentage of good songs are. With '81 shows, I so often enjoy the first 1-3 hours, and then the top 10-15 songs are mostly a buzz kill--full of Air Supply, John Lennon (Double Fantasy LP songs, which are far and away my least favorites of his), country crossovers, and ballads. However, the first half of this show has mostly been fantastic--starting with Blue Oyster Cult's "Burnin' for You" (a song title that Dave Wallenberg must love ). What a great classic rock hit that is. Same with Greg Kihn, Balance, Pablo Cruise, Rick Springfield, and even Kim Carnes' "Draw of the Cards"...

I'm into the Top 5 of 10/19/85. Six of the top seven songs in this countdown would become number one songs, as the one-week wonders really began to take hold in late 1985. Four other songs on the chart that week also reached the summit, for a total of 11 chart-toppers.
This show featured just one debut, as Casey points out, and this had only occurred a few times in AT40 history up until that point.
My favorite one-hit wonder and topped the survey this week - Aha with "Take on Me". Iconic video and a great song, too, IMHO.

Todd, it looks like that 'six out of seven' plus four confused you a bit. Added the 4 to the 7 to get 11 huh? But it is 6 #1s in the top 7 plus the other 4 for a total of 10 #1 hits in that show. IIRC, 11 is the most #1s in an 80s show and it was done in your fave year, 1986. Anyway, I am listening to teh show from exactly one year earlier than yours....10/20/84. And right after I posted, an unusual thing happened. Only a portion of a song was played as an LDD. Pat Benatar's "Hell is for Children". Casey even said here is part of that album cut from Pat's 'Crimes of Passion' Lp. We played this cut back when I was in college radio earlier in the 80s. Great song for a tough subject..child abuse.

Lack of sleep and too much work will make a person perform incorrect simple math, I suppose. Thanks for pointing out my error, duke.
I'm now onto CT40 from exactly 11 years later than my first show today, 10/19/96. I don't do many mid-90s shows, but this one actually has a lot of songs I like, including the song now playing at number 22, "Don't Let Go" by En Vogue. This countdown features two songs from Alanis Morisette and one from Natalie Merchant, so it can't be all bad.

AT10 from 4/8/06 and AT40 from 9/6/03 guest hosted by some guy named Ryan Seacrest. And he truly does a good job. And in retrospect, by the sound of the show and the way he was allowed to "break script" in a way Ed McMann and others never were, it is clear these shows he did in 2003 were an audition of sorts.

British Hits Special from 4/6/74. A better Beatles show than the actual Beatles show from 1981, which I felt contained waaaay too many so-so hits from the solo years.
I wish all specials had been done like the British Hits special. Decide on a time period (here it was beginning to end - 1955 to what was the present) and then play the songs as ranked. Not these "big acts, but here is a mediocre hit we will play" specials
