Now I'm onto 7/26/80. Half of the songs I can bypass. Either I've heard them enough, or I never did want to hear them in the first.

Listened to 8-1-81 this morning.
I don't know how I avoided it all these years, maybe because it wasn't a big hit and spent only a couple weeks on the charts... But I heard Double Dutch Bus for the first time today...
HOLY CRAP is that a STUPID song! I thought current music was bad, I thought other songs were weird. This one TAKES THE WHOLE BAKERY! Ugh!

I heard the 8/01/1981 AT40 show when it first aired over thirty years ago. "Double Dutch Bus" was the track I was most excited to hear that week, simply because I like when a street oriented, playground & block rocking, dance floor filling, party song like this makes the pop chart. This song topped the Soul chart for FOUR weeks & still gets sizable airplay in NYC (and likely in its Philadelphia homebase). I like it more now than when it first came out.
So I'm not the least bit surprised that a pop/AC/AOR mobile DJ from upstate NY would think this was a stupid song.

I have to confess I get a bang out of "Double Dutch Bus". Good party song and kinda funny. Also, I remember Casey doing a video spotlight of that song on America's Top 10 sometime during its run (though the video is hokey and not very well done).

I think some of the "zingity zang" or whatever nonsense lyrics did resurface in Missy Elliot's 2003 hit "Gossip Folks", which went top 10 CHR. As for the video, I've never seen it, but it was 1981 so no surprise if it looks hokey or dated now.

In its final AT40 week, Casey identified the song's dialect (what the kids are saying) as Pig Latin.

For two, I play ALL types at parties, on the radio, online and on my very popular countdown series. I get that you're a mark for rap, especially the really bad stuff. But even my 16 year old, who hates a lot of the hokey songs I like, thought it was the dumbest thing she'd ever heard. Where the 80's are concerned, and top 40 wise, I really can't think of a worse upbeat song. Surprising or not, I like early rap. From the popular like Run DMC, Rapture by Blondie and LL Cool J's 80's material, to lesser known by many, non hits like Jam On It & Planet Rock. You don't know me, or as much as me, kindly leave me out of your thoughts and posts.

Wow! I remember Double-Dutch Bus! I first heard it on AT40 but had heard ABOUT it first. Like many talked-about songs that I didn't hear locally, AT40 was my formal introduction to mid-chart songs like this. It was so quirky and different. I liked it and bought it! The song "Double-Barrel" by Dave and Ansil Collins (1971) had that same feel, lyrics you couldn't understand or make sense of but the groove was infectious. I bought that quirky song, too. Guilty pleasures!

Now, see, the first time I heard Double Barrel, I liked it, mainly because, though kinda goofy, it had a good groove and I like the instrumentation. Anyone know if that Dave Collins is the same one that did Holding On For Love with Cargo in 1987? It's a great tune! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPlDNTu6P_c

Dave and Ansel Collins were(are?) Jamaican. Just for the record, I love both "Double Barrel" and "Double Dutch Bus". Mainly because they're both so different from everything else that was on the air in 1971 and 1981, respectively. Have both on 45.

Well, it was 16 years later, but not alot is known about that Cargo single, Hell, until someone posted a YouTube video with a copyright date, I'd have guessed it came out between 80 & 82. Has that early 80's smooth sound.
