The Jimmy Castor Bunch weren’t only about novelty songs such as “Hey Leroy…”, “Troglodyte”, and the “Bertha Butt Boogie”. Here’s their jazzy take on the Nat King Cole classic written by Mel Torme. The Christmas Song – Jimmy Castor Bunch

Many years ago, I was looking through a record price guide, and stumbled upon the entry below. It noted the record was rare. I ended up being in a record store later the same day, looking through a box of Christmas 45s and there was this record. Took it out of the sleeve to find that it was unfortunately unplayable. I continued looking and three records later there was another copy, this one in mint condition. Still own this 45. The group is The Christmas Spirit. The members of the group included Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman (Flo & Eddie) of the Turtles along with Linda Ronstadt. Christmas Is My Time Of Year – The Christmas SpiritIn 1976, The Monkees (sans Michael Nesmith) sang a pretty good cover version. Christmas Is My Time Of Year – Dolenz, Jones, and Tork

I’ve gotta admit, IMHO, if this came out in the mid-60s, and was done by someone like say Marilyn McCoo of the Fifth Dimension, it could have been a more durable Xmas original. But with Neil Sedaka, “A Christmas Prayer” and his usual ‘sha-la-la-la’s, it had no chance to be a success when it was released in 2008… too mushy for our time. Still he can compose a good melody after almost six decades in the music business regardless of the squishy lyrics IMO. A Christmas Prayer – Neil SedakaSo for my other choice, here’s an almost opposite song. And this second one is from a harder-rock band Slade, who did the original version of ‘Cum on Feel the Noize’ (#98 in 1973). Now their original Christmas song from later that year actually didn’t chart on the Hot 100, despite eventually becoming their biggest-selling single internationally: Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade

How about a bonus? As I mentioned several times before, the Ides Of March are out and occasionally performing nearly 44 years after "Vehicle" stormed up the charts in the spring of 1970. In 2006, the band released a beautiful Christmas song that captures the spirit of the season. The link below is from a live performance a couple of weeks ago Sharing Christmas - Ides Of March

No Christmas season would be complete, musically, without the following novelty song that was released in 1973:

This thread would not be complete without a link to Darlene Love's annual appearance on The David Letterman Show last evening. She of course sings the greatest rock era Christmas song (IMO), and the only original song on Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You". Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Darlene Love

We're going to stick with Chicago based psychedelic songs for tonight's offering. This one certainly marches to the beat of a different drummer. It combines a traditional Christmas song with the 1961 #25 jazz classic "Take Five" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet as its melody. That I chose this day of the week to add it to the thread is a no-brainer. Deck Five - Saturday's Children

From their late 90s release "A Lovemongers' Christmas", the Wilson sisters released this beautiful Christmas song: Christmas Waits - Heart
