I was trying to think of Top 40 hits in which the title of the song are the first words of the lyrics. And I couldn't come up with too many. I know there have to be tons. The only ones so far I can think of are:
"Hello, It's Me" - Todd Rundgren
"Beth" - KISS
"Always And Forever" - Heatwave
"U Can't Touch This" - MC Hammer
"We Built This City" - Starship
"Shout" - Tears For Fears
Two songs that were back to back at number one:
"Every Breath You Take" - The Police
"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" - Eurythmics
There are some close ones ( "7" by Prince, "True" by Spandau Ballet, "Shadows Of The Night" by Pat Benatar) but help me out on other top 40 hits who lead off the song with the exact title.

How about just about every song by Neil Diamond? "Love on the Rocks" "Longfellow Serenade" "Hello Again", etc.

1985 number ones seem to do it quite a bit. Another one is "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Richie.

One #1 from each year in the 1970's (not previously cited):
1970 - "My Sweet Lord" 1971 - "Go Away Little Girl" 1972 - "I Can See Clearly Now" 1973 - "Delta Dawn" 1974. - "Sunshine on My Shoulders" 1975 - "One of These Nights" 1976 - "Boogie Fever" 1977 - "I'm Your Boogie Man" 1978 - "With a Little Luck" 1979 - "Good Times"
Believe these are accurate.

From this weekend's broadcast of the 9/22/84 show... these songs all begin with their title:
"Bop 'Til You Drop" by Rick Springfield "Some Guys Have All The Luck" by Rod Stewart "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister "Lights Out" by Peter Wolf "Stuck On You" by Lionel Richie Some Top 40 stations played a version of "Missing You" by John Waite in which he softly speaks, "Missing You... Missing You..." before the first verse begins.
That's six songs in the Top 40 in which the title is first mentioned in the song.

This may not be a complete list from this weekend's 9/23/78 show but these songs start with the title:
* "Don't Look Back" by Boston * "Love Is In The Air" by John Paul Jones * "You and I" by Rick James * "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Kenny Loggins & Stevie Nicks * "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth, Wind & Fire (the Beatles version doesn't start with the title) * "Shame" by Evelyn Champagne King * "Who Are You" by The Who
Foreigner missed this list by two words as Lou Gramm sang, "Well I'm" before "Hot Blooded" in the first line of the song. I may have missed one or two songs here as I am not quite as familiar with some 70's music.

Some country No. 1 hits from 1970 onward:
1970 * "Baby, Baby (I Know You're a Lady)" -- David Houston. * "My Love" -- Sonny Jame (remake of the Petula Clark song from 1966). * "Hello, Darlin'" -- Conway Twitty. * "Don't Keep Me Hangin' On" -- Sonny James.
1971 * "Bright Lights, Big City" -- Sonny James. * "Good Lovin' (Makes it Right)" -- Tammy Wynette. * "Easy Loving" -- Freddie Hart. * "Daddy Frank (the Guitar Man)" -- Merle Haggard. (Excludes his brief spoken-word intro on the album version.)
(Honorable mention to "The Year Clayton Delaney Died" by Tom T. Hall ... falls short just because of two words preceding the title .. "I remember ... ")
1972 * "Carolyn" -- Merle Haggard. * "Bless Your Heart" -- Freddie Hart. * "Woman, Sensuous Woman" -- Don Gibson. * "I Can't Stop Loving You" -- Conway Twitty * "Funny Face" -- Donna Fargo. * "My Man (Understands)" -- Tammy Wynette.
1973 * "She Needs Someone to Hold Her When She Cries" -- Conway Twitty. * "Superman" -- Donna Fargo. * "Come Live With Me" -- Roy Clark. * "What's Your Mama's Name" -- Tanya Tucker * "Satin Sheets" -- Jeanne Pruett * "Kids Say the Darndest Things" -- Tammy Wynette. * "Why Me Lord" -- Kris Kristofferson. * "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" -- Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. * "We're Gonna Hold On" -- George Jones and Tammy Wynette. * "If We Make It Through December" -- Merle Haggard.
1974 * "I Love" -- Tom T. Hall. * "Jolene" -- Dolly Parton. * "Would You Lay With Me in a Field of Stone" -- Tanya Tucker. * "Is It Wrong (For Loving You)" -- Sonny James. * "Pure Love" -- Ronnie Milsap. * "I Don't See Me In Your Eyes (Anymore)" -- Charlie Rich. * "This Time" -- Waylon Jennings. * "You Can't Be a Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)" -- Donna Fargo. * "Old Man From the Mountain" -- Merle Haggard. * "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" -- Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. * "Love is Like a Butterfly" -- Dolly Parton. * "Country Is" -- Tom T. Hall. * "She Called Me Baby" -- Charlie Rich.
1975 * "Roll On Big Mama" -- Joe Stampley. * "I'm Not Lisa" -- Jessi Colter. * "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" -- Freddy Fender. * "Feelins'" -- Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. (BTW -- definitely NOT the Morris Albert song.)
Barely averted -- "Love Put a Song in My Heart" -- Johnny Rodriguez. (The first words are "Yes, your ... ")
1976 * "Till the Rivers All Run Dry" -- Don Williams. * "Together Again" -- Emmylou Harris. (Remake of the 1964 Buck Owens two-sided hit.) * "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time" -- Mickey Gilley. * "My Eyes Can Only See As Far as You" -- Charley Pride. * "I Don't Want to Have to Marry You" -- Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius. * "Somebody Somewhere (Don't Know What He's Missing Tonight)" -- Loretta Lynn. * "Sweet Dreams (Of You)" -- Emmylou Harris. (The live remake of another 1960s song, this time covering Patsy Cline.)
Barley averted, as just one word precedes the title: * "The Door Is Always Open" -- Dave & Sugar. ("Well ... .") * "If You've Got the Money I've Got the Time" -- Willie Nelson. ("Well ..." again.)
1977 * "Broken Down in Tiny Pieces" -- Billy "Crash" Craddock. * "Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow" -- Tom Jones. (His first country hit ... not his last, but his only No. 1 hit. Technically, his biggest hit ever, just slipping past 1971's "She's a Lady.") * "Southern Nights" -- Glen Campbell. * "She's Pulling Me Back Again" -- Mickey Gilley. * "Play Guitar Play" -- Conway Twitty. * "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" -- The Kendalls. (Sounds like a song Thompson Square would do a dead-perfect remake on, vocal range for vocal range with Shawna Thompson compared to Jeannie Kendall.) * "Here You Come Again" -- Dolly Parton.
Just missing, with a "Yes" as the first word before the title ... "More To Me" -- Charley Pride.
1978 * "Take This Job and Shove It" -- Johnny Paycheck. (Just begging for a Tracy Byrd remake. He'd be perfect for it.) * "What a Difference You've Made In My Life" -- Ronnie Milsap. (Amy Grant also has a version out ... don't know if she and Ronnie ever recorded a duet version.) * "Don't Break the Heart The Heart That Loves You" -- Margo Smith. (Remake of the Connie Francis No. 1 pop hit from 1962.) * "She Can Put Her Shoes Under My Bed (Anytime)" -- Johnny Duncan. * "It Only Hurts For a Little While" -- Margo Smith. (Another old pop remake, this time first by the Ames Brothers in 1956.) * "I Believe in You" -- Mel Tillis. (Different song than the Don Williams No. 1 country-top 25 pop hit of the same name from 1980.) * "Blue Skies" -- Willie Nelson. * "Tear Time" -- Dave & Sugar. * "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed" -- Barbara Mandrell. (Her signature song.) * "Sweet Desire" -- The Kendalls. (Again, ripe for the picking by Thompson Square, with Shawna singing lead.) * "On My Knees" -- Charlie Rich and Janie Frickie.
1979 * "I Really Got the Feeling" -- Dolly Parton. (Flip this pop-styled ballad over, and you get the far different "Baby I'm Burning.") * "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" -- Barbara Mandrell. (We just heard the Luther Ingram version on the Sept. 9, 1972, AT40.) * "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" -- Bellamy Brothers. (The most famous pick-up line in history, and actually used in a Cupid dating site commercial.) * "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" -- Charlie Daniels Band. (Also recently heard on an AT40 rebroadcast, only it was CDB.) * "All the Gold in California" -- Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. (Their signature song.)
More to come, with the list extending into the 1980s.
