Count me in as someone who also thinks early '73 shows are a chore to hear. 3/31/73 turned the corner for me... great set of debuts that week... but for some reason, early '73 shows don't have many memorable tunes.
Some early and mid '81 shows seems long as well. There just aren't too many up tempo songs on many of those shows. I like some ballads but when a good number of songs are ballads and mind-tempo songs... it can make for a long show.
I don't think I could ever hate most of a show but those timeframes leave me with a "meh" feeling.

Ah the jokes on you then. Look at the title of this thread again. I think the show I heard last night might be one for this list for you....8/8/81 or something from that year anyway. The title of the thread has nothing to do with my answer. I was responding to the person before my list that asked "Here's an even tougher question- If you were on a desert island, which 4 of your favorite shows would you have to have on that desert island? I can't even to begin to process that right now."

I apologize for misleading the purpose of this thread. I just simply was being hypothetical.

My bad. I know you well enough to know that is how you frequently go with these types of things. Kind of the contrarian way of interpretation. Anyway, having started quantifying a lot of the shows that I listen to by listing songs that are good or a B grade and great or an A grade, I doubt I will ever have anything for this thread. So far 19 is the least number of good and great songs I have listed in the 2 weeks or so I have done that. So getting anything less than half will be noteworthy for me(yes 19 is less than half the top 40, but well under half is like 10 or 15). Getting to most or all of a chart will not happen therefore.

I would say in almost every week there are probably more songs that I don't care for than I like.I am not saying I hate them , but they aren't favorites and are still better than today's music -Just looking at this week's show from 1976 and I like 16 of the songs, there are a few I don't like and the rest I am indifferent about

Wow you people that just listen to these shows for your health or whatever reason even though you dislike so many of the songs are something else. I thought 25 songs on the 8/21/76 show which is basically the same as the 8/28/76 show with but one debut record, were great. As for the other 15 songs, virtually all of them were good, leaving only a handful in the ok category and none in the dislike category.

I don't hate all the chart, but next week's 1988 show is from one of the weaker periods for top 40 music IMO. However, this was also in the midst of Casey's "Commentary Casey" period, with some of his most interesting talk, so the show is still well worth hearing anyway.

^January shows are usually more miss than hit for most years to me, particularly in the 80's. Two Januaries that I really liked were 1986 and 1988, so I'm looking forward to the next two weeks (and make that three actually--1985 is my favorite January of the 80's for top 40 music). And I agree on Casey's delivery for 1988--maybe my favorite of the "Caseys" along with the 1972-74 Casey.
I loved most of the 12/28/85 show and of course, the majority of songs on that show also appear on the 1/18/86 countdown. A great time in music IMHO.
And btw, I know this has been discussed several times over on these here boards, but I always feel like the 80's "hot streak" ended in the fall of 1986...but of course that's a pretty subjective thing.

I hated the weeks during the Shadoe Stevens AT40 Top 40 Mainstream format when there were no debuts and no droppers in the same week on the chart - This happened 2 times in 1993 and once in 1994.

Mine would have to be most of 87. Most of that year was areal clunker for me. That is my least favorite year. There were only a handful of songs that I liked for the whole year. I know most people here think it's the best year.

I know most people here think it's the best year. I would say that the first few months of 87 were ok, but from May-November 1987 was pretty stale to me. Ironically when "The Final Countdown" by Europe fell out of the Top 40, that to me was the turning point of 87. There were a few good songs here and there (May-November 1987), but not a whole countdown.

If I still listened to American Top 40 with Seacrest, this just might happen from time to time, as today's music is hardly worth listening to. But I spare myself the annoyance, both of the music and Seacrest's AT40 format.

I think most classic AT40 fans think of 1987 as an OK to decent year, but with unevenness on most of the countdowns. There are several countdowns throughout 1987 that I think are really good, and some that are just above average. I think I'm the opposite of at40nut--I'm not a big fan of January to April 1987, but I really like May through mid-August and love mid-October through the end of the year. 1987 pales in comparison to the 1983-86 period, but I'll take it most of the time.
