I didn’t think “Mr. Jaws” was that funny either when I first heard it about 15 years ago. It sounded real amateurish, like something you’d hear in a college Radio Practicum class. Then I was surprised to see it hit #1 in Cash Box. At the time, Cash Box & Record World (where the single also hit #1) were more sales driven charts and did not give much weight to radio airplay--obviously, many little kids bought the 45; giving Dickie Goodman his only #1 and million seller. Sadly, Goodman committed suicide in 1989.

Dont mind king tut, but i loathed Take off by Bob & Doug McKenzie when i heard it in the 80s,perhaps it was because i never saw the show .Even now having seen YouTube clips of SCTV i still find it painfully unfuny when it pops up on AT40 reruns "Take Off" debuted in the Top 40 on 2/20/82, just missing this weekend's "A" show. And reviewing the Hot 100 of 2/13/82, I couldn't resist a youtube visit to enjoy this one again. Sorry, it was funny then and it holds up yet today. Brother rivalry in gest never gets old. But like all novelty hits, they're best when not overexposed.

"Planes Trains & Automobiles" was hysterical-Steve Martin & the late John Candy were both outstanding.

"Take Off" was pure comedy gold-Having Geddy Lee on that record was awesome!

A question for those of you in your 40s or younger - I thought of this hearing King Tut. When you hear Steve Martin from the 70s do you think he was funny? Back about 75/76 I thought he was one of the funniest people I had ever seen. And now that makes no sense. I know what he was doing was very very different and new - but it now seems so so dated - a lot like early SNL. You're probably too young to remember, but in 77/78 he was like a Beatle of comedy. He was huge. Monty Python and especially SCTV still are genius to me, but Steve Martin and early SNL? No. Steve Martin's best comedy bit came in a profanity laden rant at the car rental place in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 😊 He was really good in that movie.

I just saw this thread, I missed it the first time around. I'm 35 now and find Steve Martin to be a fantastic comedic actor. I have enjoyed every movie I have seen him in. And I enjoy all of his talk show appearances.
But I have never particularly liked his standup or comedy records. I love lots of stand up comedy, but Steve has never done it for me. Every time I hear a "wild and crazy guys" clip on Time Warp with Bill St James or see an old Steve Martin SNL clip I just don't get it.

Funny story. I was in Goodwill earlier today, and I happened to notice an older guy standing in the other line with a record album he was waiting to pay for. The album? The Great White North! I could clearly see the "Bob & Doug McKenzie" on it, which made me think of both "Take Off", obviously, and of their recent mention on here - but it's only through double-checking online to confirm that yes, it was that album the guy bought. (Apparently they did release a follow-up, a soundtrack to their movie Strange Brew, but the cover was definitely North.) As for myself, I stocked up on some 90s fare in CD form: Toni Braxton's self-titled debut, Surfacing by Sarah McLachlan, Supernatural by Santana, and Pieces of You by Jewel.

I'm in my late 50s, and I used to have Steve Martin's first 3 comedy tapes. Haven't listened to them in decades, so I don't know how well they do/don't hold up.
But I do have King Tut on my iPod. Love it. "Got a condo made of stone-a!"

I’ve got digital versions of both “Let’s Get Small” and “Comedy is Not Pretty”. I think they hold up quite well.
