I thought I learned on TV's America's Top 10 that "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell was the slowest-climbing top ten record in Billboard history? I know "Tainted Love" went to #8 in 1982.
Speaking of which, I thought I learned one time (not sure if Shadoe mentioned it at some point) that "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul was a slow-climbing song that would eventually go to #1? If so, it probably got jumped over a lot of songs for sure!

"Straight Up" had a relatively unremarkable climb to #1. Debuted on the Hot 100 12/3/88, entered the top 40 12/24/88 (and was frozen for a week), and hit #1 on 2/11/1989.

In 1981-82, it took Vangelis' "Chariots of Fire" 11 weeks to enter the Top 40 and another 11 to finally spend its single week at #1. The single's total chart life was a remarkable 28 weeks! The interesting thing about "Chariots of Fire" is that when it did finally hit the Top 40, even when it took 11 weeks, only one song ever jumped it. Olivia Newton John's "Make A Move On Me" did just that on 3-6-82 going up 20 notches from 39-19. But even that week, "Chariots" still went up a strong 10 notches to 20 and was two months away from hitting the top. Conversely, "Sad Eyes" was getting jumped by "Rise" two weeks before it hit number one. That's why I think what Robert John did is more remarkable. It just doesn't seem plausible that "Sad Eyes", after spending 13 weeks going up the Top 40 and holding at 6 for a second week all of a sudden became some type of juggernaut in its 14th week on the Top 40 and could leap to two. I know it happens (see "Queen of Hearts" from 1981 or "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" from 1990) where a song that held at 6 for at least two weeks jumped to 2, but neither of them jumped eventual number ones to get to two, and neither would hit number one.
