In Elton John's "Circle of Life" -- "It's the Wheel of Fortune". Not a direct reference to the tv show, yet worth a mention. Every time I hear that verse, I reminisce about my experience as a contestant on that show almost 20 years ago.

"Rocket 2 U" by The Jets mentions All My Children. "What Have You Done For Me Lately" by Janet Jackson mentions One Life To Live. Another soap "Young & The Restless" is mentioned in Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" and Flo Rida's "I Cry."

"Get outta my dreams, get into my car" by Billy Ocean mentions " Let's Make A Deal".Though it's not talking about the show itself,it's worth mentioning.

Speaking of WOF, Survivor mentioned it in "High On You": "I let the wheel of fortune spin." Just like your example, it's not a direct reference to the game show. BTW, I started a thread last year about top 40 songs that are also the exact names of game shows. I'll bump it up when I get the chance.

"Rocket 2 U" by The Jets mentions All My Children. "What Have You Done For Me Lately" by Janet Jackson mentions One Life To Live. Speaking of soap operas, Gino Vannelli's "Living Inside Myself" mentions Guiding Light. I know there was some other song that mentions that soap, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.

Yes, Sting had left The Police by 1985 (they had broken up) and does indeed sing backup on "Money For Nothing". Knopfler is lead singer and lead guitarist of Dire Straits, so naturally he is on the song! Speaking of "Money For Nothing": It irritates me that a particular verse is now ALWAYS edited out of this song when it is played on air today. You all know the verse I mean--which was perfectly acceptable to hear back in '85 but is, I guess, deemed too offensive for today's listeners' ears. I guess the irony of the lyrics is just too subtle for people who get "offended' at the drop of a hat. I hate song censorship!

I don't think I've ever heard an AT40 from the period that had the missing verse.

While on the topic of censored/edited lyrics, it frustrates me to be unable to listen to (the) Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner" without "...funky s__t..." being replaced by "...funky kicks..." I know the "s" word is one of the seven that can't be said on television, but this is radio, man.

It also has a much shorter intro than the LP cut. It is true that today, even if a station plays the LP version with the long intro, they always use the "kicks" edit. The other one that bugs me is "Heart of Glass". One rarely hears the extra verse with the "...soon turned out to be a pain in the a--" line anymore on the airwaves!

I never heard the song intact on Top 40 radio (although I assume many AOR stations played the full version).

When the "Brothers In Arms" LP was current, AOR stations (RIP ;D) would always play the song intact, "little f-----" verse and all. Nowadays, "Classic Rock" format stations--the closest thing anymore to the old AOR stations (they're still playing the same songs!) never play the 'offending' verse.

I've heard classic rock stations here in SF that plays it with that verse. In fact, I don't remember ever hearing the radio friendly version except for AT40.
