Does anybody know how many duet partners have had 2 or more Top 40 hits?
Who has had the most Top 40 hits as duet partners?

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel immediately come to mind. Also, Darryl Dragon and Toni Tennille (Captain & Tennille) had several top 40's. Just prior to the AT40 era, Marvin Gaye partnered with Tammi Terrell on a few top 40 soul hits. These are "off the top of my head."

I was thinking that brownjb81 was talking about solo artists that teamed up more than once.
Such as Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta, Kenny Rogers & Kim Carnes, Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville, etc.

Such as Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta, Kenny Rogers & Kim Carnes, Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville, etc. Ok: Barbra Streisand teamed with Barry Gibb on two top 40's ("Guilty", "What Kind of Fool"). While Barry wasn't an accomplished solo artist, they were not a common duet.
Also, Michael Jackson teamed with Paul McCartney to record "The Girl is Mine" and "Say Say Say."

Patti Austin & James Ingram went to #1 with "Baby Come To Me" in 1983-They had a minor follow up called "How Do You Keep The Music Playing?"

Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross are tied for the most different partners that they reached the top 41 with in the pre-Soundscan era, with 4. Ironically, Diana was the 4th partner for Marvin but Marvin was the first partner for Diana. Marvin also dueted with Mary Wells, Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell. Diana also dueted with Michael Jackson (I said top 41 instead of 40 because they reached #41 with "Ease on Down the Road"), Lionel Richie and Julio Iglesias. Marvin has the most top 40/41 duet hits with 11.
Honorable mention goes to Olivia Newton-John who got label credit in duets with John Travolta, Cliff Richard and Andy Gibb. Plus she sang on "Fly Away" by John Denver but got did not label credit and also on "Xanadu" which could be argued that it was a duet with Jeff Lynne but was billed as Olivia and ELO.

^ A second honorable mention goes to Barbra Streisand, who teamed with Neil Diamond, Barry Gibb, and Donna Summer in separate duets that charted in the top 40 from 1978 through 1981 .

Yeah, Duets count as long as they're not a regular thing like Hall & Oates. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell count though because he charted on his own.
Even a band with a solo counts like Queen/David Bowie, Pet Shop Boys, Art Of Noise/Tom Jones... etc...

This is what I come up with when I view duet as male-female or female-male:
***Marvin Gaye*** 2 with Mary Wells 1 with Kim Weston 7 with Tammi Terrell 2 with Diana Ross
I did not include the 2001 single w/Erick Sermon. ---------------------------------------------------------- ***Kenny Rogers*** Kim Carnes Sheena Easton Dolly Parton Dottie West
Has appeared twice in top 40 as part of a trio & has numerous duets that failed to reach top 40. ------------------------------------------------------------ ***Barbra Streisand*** Neil Diamond 2 with Barry Gibb Don Johnson Bryan Adams
Did not include Donna Summer 1979 hit. --------------------------------------------------- ***Elton John*** Kiki Dee Jennifer Rush Aretha Franklin LeAnn Rimes --------------------------------------------------- ***Janet Jackson*** Heavy D Jermaine Dupri Nelly Michael Jackson Busta Rhymes Beenie Man Chingy
Has appeared as part of at least 2 duos.
Music industry went away from using "and" for special collaborations and now use featured artists(featuring). So it is hard to judge if some of Janet's chart singles are true duets by 1970s standards.

Elton John also duetted with George Michael on "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me".
And while it wasn't a top 40 pop hit, Barbra Streisand duetted with Celine Dion on the AC hit "Tell Him".

What about Janet's duet with Luther Vandross on "The Best Things in Life Are Free"?

Similarly, Janet also was the vocalist on Herb Alpert's hit "Diamonds", and she also appeared on Shaggy's "Luv Me, Luv Me".

Janet's song with Luther Vandross on "The Best Things in Life Are Free" also includes Ralph Tresvant & Bell Biv DeVoe.
Janet was on Herb Alpert's hit "Diamonds" with Lisa Keith. I show "Luv Me, Luv Me" peaked at #76 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Honorable Mention goes to Peter Cetera who had four duet partners (the first two were big hits, while the last two barely scratched the Hot 100, I would guess due to the influx of grunge and Rhythmic CHR at the time):
1986 - Amy Grant - The Next Time I Fall - #1 1989 - Cher - After All - #6 1993 - Chaka Khan - Feels Like Heaven - #71 (#5 AC) 1995 - Crystal Bernard - Forever Tonight - #86 (#22 AC)
EDIT: The last two were decent AC hits (See above)
