Moved into the Top 5 from outside the Top 20 Moved into the Top 10 from outside the Top 25 Moved into the Top 20 from outside the Top 40
The songs from the early 80s are fringe songs to show not only were there few songs that moved 40 spots or more there are not many that moved over 35 between 1980 and 1989.
There are more songs from 1972 that fit 40 notches within the Hot 100, or 20 notches within the Top 40 than the decade of the 1980s.

Here are four more leapers into the top 60 (this, plus my previous posts, exhausts my research through 12/31/74): 1970: "One Man Band" by Chicago (decent; nowhere near their previous hit "Out in the Country) bubbled under at #101 on 11/14/70, then charted at #55 on 11/21/70. 1971: "Superstar" by the Carpenters (one of three top 20 songs by that title -- and the best, IMHO -- that charted in 1971, each with different lyrics) bubbled under at #101 at 8/28/71, then charted at #49 on 9/04/71. 1972: "Sweet Surrender" by Bread (a nice tune that receives little to no current airplay) bubbled under at #101 on 11/04/72, then charted at #55 on 11/11/72. 1974: "Skin Tight" by Ohio Players (ok, but not as strong as their next charted song, "Fire") bubbled under at #101 on 8/31/74, then charted at #45 on 9/07/74. Two trends are noted: Fewer songs leaped into the top 60 from a bubbling under position as the decade of the 1970's progressed; also, many of these songs bubbled under at a position of 101 or nearby. pgfromwp, Great information...thanks for your time and effort.

However, each statistic you've posted is noteworthy -- and has been added. Thank you for taking the time to gather this information.

I didn't see this one, but "Don't Tell Me Lies" by Breathe jumped from 96 to 52 on 1/21/89, and that's the truth!

In defense of jmack19's list--was it decided that a song that jumped more than 20 notches from outside the top 40 into the top 40 with at least 20 of those within the top 40 count? If so, "Old Days", "How Sweet It Is", "I'm Sorry", "Something Better To Do", and "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" would all count. I know you guys started this list and I don't want to rock the boat too much, but just wondering if such moves should count. Otherwise, you could say a song's jump from 40-20 would qualify to be on the list, and thus have more significance than a song that might jump from say, 55-20. I think most people would agree that a 35-notch jump to #20 would be a more significant chart movement than a 20-notch jump to #20. Just my two cents...

Bumping this up with a newly found leaper from the bubbling unders (of 7/24/65) into the next week's top 60 (of 7/31/65), as per Pete B's criteria: "It's the Same Old Song" by the Four Tops jumped 56 notches from #110 to #54. Happened to notice this while researching the July 1965 Billboard hot 100 charts for an independent project.

My apologies as the following aren't complete years, but I will work on putting a full year together. For now, here are a few: November 25, 1978 - "Le Freak" Chic - 37 to 6 April 28, 1979 - "Hot Stuff" Donna Summer - 79 to 29 (just added per seminolefan's post) June 2, 1979 - "Ring My Bell" Anita Ward - 39 to 19 August 11, 1979 - "Don't Bring Me Down" Electric Light Orchestra - 41 to 18 October 13, 1979 - "Heartache Tonight" Eagles - 52 to 15 October 20, 1979 - "Tusk" Fleetwood Mac - 40 to 15 October 20, 1979 - "Still" Commodores - 38 to 10 November 3, 1979 - "No More Tears" Donna Summer and Barbara Streisand - 33 to 10 August 9, 1980 - "Upside Down" Diana Ross - 49 to 10 May 1, 1982 - "Heat of the Moment" Asia - 55 to 20 June 26, 1982 - "Eye of the Tiger" Survivor - 42 to 19 October 2, 1982 - "Heart Attack" Olivia Newton John - 39 to 13 October 30, 1982 - "Truly" Lionel Richie - 36 to 14 November 20, 1982 - "The Girl Is Mine" Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney - 36 to 14 November 20, 1982 - "Sexual Healing" Marvin Gaye - 52 to 19 After thinking about this--even if a song jumped 20 notches or more and only part if it was in the top 40, if at least 20 notches of that jump were in the top 40, shouldn't that count? In other words, take "Eye of the Tiger" and "Body Language". Even though "Body Language" had a bigger jump, only 7 of it's 29 notches fell within the top 40. However, "Eye of the Tiger" may have jumped only 23 notches, but 21 of those were in the top 40, which seems like it should count. Pete and dukedeb--any thoughts since you were the originators of this thread? A few more of significance that jumped more than 20 notches, but only partially within the Top 40: July 7, 1979 - "Good Times" Chic - 50 to 25 August 1, 1981 - "Who's Crying Now" Journey - 56 to 30 August 29, 1981 - "Start Me Up" Rolling Stones - 61 to 35 May 15, 1982 - "Body Language" Queen - 62 to 33 February 13, 1982 - "We Got the Beat" Go-Go's - 64 to 31 February 13, 1982 - "I Love Rock 'n Roll" Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - 63 to 39 February 20, 1982 - "I Love Rock 'n Roll" Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - 39 to 18
