I noticed on this week's 80s show, Elt's Nobody Wins moved 27-40. Was this the largest jump ever within the Top 40 for a song that didn't reach the top 20? lasvegaskid, I'm going to give you a tentative 'yes' which will either lock in your observation, or stimulate someone to challenge it. By the way, did it reach the Top 25?

So, that makes Theme From Shaft the highest debuting song on AT40, at #9?

Yes it was and the highest debut in the 80s was Diana Ross' "Upside Down" at #10 in 1980. BTW, the biggest mover in the 90s on AT40 was Madonna's "I'll Remember" in 1994, 39 to 16. Shadoe Stevens indicated that it was the biggest mover since "Maneater" climbed 24 notches in November 1982.

You know it may be a strange twist here because I have found 2 songs which made bigger climbs than "Nobody Wins" and they happen to be in the same week. The week of 4/1/72, "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" went from 37 to 22 and peaked at 21 while "The Day I Found Myself" went from 38 to 24 and peaked at 23.

"Thinking Of You" by Paul Davis debuted on May 29, 1976 in the Hot 100 at #49. The following week it went up to #47 and the week after that it peaked at #45. Is there any other record that debuted on the chart in the Top 50 and climbed no higher that #45?

Is there any other record that debuted on the chart in the Top 50 and climbed no higher that #45? When I read your post, Pete, I recalled that there was something "fishy" about that Davis record info. A quick look through my charts identified what it was. Davis, in fact, did not debut at 49. The song had already been on the Hot 100 for the previous 5 weeks. On the 5/22/76 chart he had moved up from 60 to 58. Then, for reasons no doubt lost in the Billboard sands of time, the following week the song moved up to 49, but Billboard put the "new entry" arrow in there. For the next four weeks, the "weeks on chart" column led readers to believe it had indeed debuted at 49. Billboard did partially fix this error on the song's last week on the Hot 100. On the 6/26/76 chart the song fell to 95. Instead of its 5th week on, they said it was its 9th week on (even though it was actually its 10th week). Whitburn's books have the correct info.
