On January 12th, 1980 (guest-hosted by Mike Cleary; also notable as the only regular show with "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang in the countdown), between #30 and #29, the first Long Distance Dedication song was "If My Friends Could See Me Now" by Linda Clifford, which only made it to #54 in 1978 -- and which was the second of her four Hot 100 appearances overall, none of which made the Top 40! (Interestingly, though, the last two, one before and one after this show, peaked exactly at #41...) That same song was used as an LDD on 9/22/79--which Casey hosted, so we might yet get to hear it on a few Premiere stations (it was in the first hour of a 4 hour 70s show). As for extras from artists who never had a top 40 hit, a semi-example might be Darlene Love's "White Christmas", an LDD on 12/27/86. Darlene has never hit the top 40 with a record under her own name, but did under several group names, and is well known in her own right.

Actually Darlene Love reached the Top 40 twice under her own name. In 1963 she reached #39 with "(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry", and peaked at #26 singing "Wait 'Til My Bobby Gets Home".

I found another one: "Hard Times" by James Taylor was used as an LDD on 9/11/82; it peaked at #72 a year earlier. However, we'll never get to hear it from Premiere, as that week's AT40 was guest hosted.

"It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls has been played at least twice as an optional.
Also "Gold Dust Woman" and "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac. And the studio version of "Landslide," although it was played a few times on AT10.

2-21-81 "Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside 10-20-84 Pat Benatar's "Hell Is For Children" was used as a LDD-I never understood why the didn't just cut the ending of the song instead of starting the song on the second verse.

On the 3/26/1983 show we heard about a month ago, "Beautiful Noise" by Neil Diamond was played as a LDD. That song was a Top Ten AC hit in early 1977 but never even made the Hot 100.
As for Optional Extras, I know that "I Melt With You" by Modern English (#78 in April, 1983) was chosen for a spring, 1983 show - probably on more than one occasion.
"Holiday Road" by Lindsey Buckingham was used as an OE on the 8/6/83 show (last heard in 2015).
Then, of course, there are the two non-Top 40 OE's coming up on this week's 1983 show. Goes to show just how instrumental that year was in defining the 1980s.

For me, the quintessential example of an extra being played on American Top 40 that never hit the charts was the last extra played on the first run of AT 40, "Into The Groove" by Madonna. Also, the last LDD of the first run was "Move On" by James Brown, which also never hit AT 40.

There have been a lot of AT40 Sneak Peek songs from 1991-1995 during the Shadoe Stevens AT40 era that never made the AT40 chart at all.

Pinball Wizard - Elton John Pretty sure "Tiny Dancer" has been an extra too.

The ones that I can remember off the top of my head: 57 Channels (And Nothin' On) - Bruce Springsteen (SO glad this one never made the Top 40!) Steep - Lauren Christy

Wasn't "Hot Streets" by Chicago used as an optional extra on a late 70's show a few years back? It seems like "Hot Streets" and Madonna's "Spotlight" (mentioned previously) stirred the most commotion on these boards when they aired.
