Two instances:
1. I was listening to an early 1970s "AT40" with Casey, and one of the extras played was Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" song to honor her sometime after she died. "MB" never made the Top 40--or 100, for that matter.
2. I was hearing a June 1983 "AT40", and one of the extras was a song that never reached higher than #48 on the chart. I cannot remember it, but it aired in June of either 2008 or 2009.
I might check the "Chart Critiques" for answers, but I thought I'd post those to generate discussion about Extras that never made the AT40!

I looked through the June 1983 cue sheets and there's no complete song included in them that missed the top 40. (That includes the 6/4/83 show, which was played in 2008 and 2009.) Maybe you're thinking of a Premiere optional extra, of which there have been many (especially recently) that missed AT40? As to "Mercedes Benz", that was one of many times from 1970-72 that Casey played a non-single cut from the #1 album of that week. MB's parent album, "Pearl", was #1 for 9 weeks and so almost everything from it was heard on AT40, though only "Me and Bobby McGee" became a (#1) hit single. |

As Casey said in a show last week regarding a question, this has happened too many times to warrant a listing. In May 1983 for example, a LDD was played of a song by Crystal Gayle that never even charted. (I noticed that while looking up stuff as mkarns apparently did).

1986 - They played "Somewhere" by Barbara Streisand from her #1 LP "The Broadway Album" as a LDD. That song peaked #43 on the Hot 100 but it did make the Cashbox Top 40.

You may be thinking of "Love My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs? That song was played on the 4/23/83 show however (in April 2011). A few others I can think of: "What I Like About You" Romantics (2/16/80 show on 2/19/11--might have been 1/26/80?) "Into the Groove" Madonna (7/13/85 show on 7/9/11) "Should I Stay or Should I Go" The Clash (3/19/83 show last week and 12/4/82 show on 12/3/11) "It's the End of the World As We Know It" R.E.M. (2/6/88 show played on 2/4/12) There are a number of others too--those are just off the top of my head... |

Also, when Premier played the first AT40 show ever from 7/4/70 on 7/4/10 the Neil Young song "Cinnamon Girl" was an extra, played toward the end of the show (near the #1 hit). "Cinnamon Girl" only reached #55 on the Billboard charts.

I got two more for you - both played on the 7/18/81 show on 7/26/81:
"Tom Sawyer" - Rush (#44)
"The Kid Is Hot Tonite" - Loverboy (#55)
I was especially surprised about the Loverboy song, since it doesn't get any kind of recurrent airplay (here in the states, that is - at least on the radio stations I listen to). I do hear "Tom Sawyer" every now and then, especially on Chicago's Jack FM station.

Not sure if this thread is referring to original extras or optional extras but "Mercedes Benz" is an example of both this week. But on several occasions in early 1971 AT40 played Janis Joplin songs that never made the top 40....only her #1 song "Me and Bobby Magee" made the top 40 so every time they played one of her songs, it would obviously be a non-top 40 hit. MB was played on 2 other occasions besides this week's show. "Move Over" was played twice and "Half Moon" and "My Baby" were played once. Ironically, she hit #41 with "Kozmic Blues" and 42 with "Cry Baby" but those songs were never played. |

That was a great period in '71, when Casey played a cut from the #1 LP each week -- I began my listening to the show in May of that year (when NYC's WPIX-FM picked up the show) and I remember hearing multiple "deep cuts" from Jesus Christ Superstar when it was at the top. I'm guessing that stopped (along with other "extras") when the show began to take off in popularity and they were able to sell a bigger commercial load. If memory serves, that happened around the time Tapestry was #1. |

Not sure if you are referring to the increased commercial load starting or when they stopped playing cuts from the #1 Lp at that time but they played cuts from the #1 Lp until June of 72. It did taper off later on in 1971.

I enjoyed the feature of playing a cut from the #1 album each week. Of course, this was the very early '70s when there were so many classic albums like "Pearl" topping the Billboard charts. There were actually non-single album tracks worth playing!
In later years, and especially by 1986 or 1987, it would have been difficult to play a track from every #1 album that would be worthy of being called anything more than "filler".

Recently on the 80s show they played "Strange Love" by Depeche Mode and that never hit top 40.

For original AT40 extras, there is at least one show where Casey played the Eagles' "Desperado" as an extra, including the 7/19/80 show from a few weeks ago. "Desperado" was also played as an LDD on a recent show (6/22/85 I'm thinking, though I don't have Pete's book in front of me to verify). Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" was also a song that Casey played as an extra. In the case of both songs, they never charted on the Top 40 (or Hot 100 for that matter) since neither was ever released as a single.

The Crystal Gayle song referred to was " You Never Gave Up On Me," a No. 5 country hit in May 1982. The song never made the Hot 100 … and you would have thought that – given the pop sound of the song and her then frequent appearances on the adult contemporary chart (her previous single, " The Woman in Me," which by the way came from the same album, "Hollywood, Tennessee," was a No. 17 AC hit) – it would have been sizable AC hit. But it never hit the AC chart, either. My guess is that AT40 in the letter-writer's market was played on an all-genre or middle-of-the-road station, or perhaps even an AC station – it is possible, after all, that "You Never Gave Up On Me" was released to AC stations but it simply failed to make the chart – the letter writer became a fan of the song and identified with it, and thus wrote his/her LDD. More than once, " I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton (the 1982 version that went to No. 1) was a LDD, although that song did peak at No. 53 on the Hot 100 and No. 17 on the adult contemporary chart. And very early in AT40's history, the Dec. 12, 1970 show (with chart date of Dec. 19), the song played was " Endlessly" by Sonny James, that week's No. 1 song, which peaked at No. 108 on the Hot 100 and never made the adult contemporary chart (although The Southern Gentleman could easily have been identified as a middle-of-the-road artist). Someone will have to tell me what the stretch story was on this one; I don't know if the song was played to highlight Sonny having 13 straight No. 1 singles in as many single releases (and thus, set a new record) or it if was an attempt to play that week's No. 1 country song as a regular feature. Anyway, those are the only three country songs released after c. mid-1970 (i.e., would have been played on a regular AT40 show) that immediately come to my mind that were played as extras but did not make the Hot 100's top 40. Here's one way to narrow the field...
All examples cited above are songs which did not make the Top 40 of Billboard's Hot 100 (in some cases, songs not even released as singles), but which at least were by artists who had Top 40 hits with other songs.
I'm aware of at least one song which was played on American Top 40 as an extra by an artist who never had a Top 40 hit!!!...
On January 12th, 1980 (guest-hosted by Mike Cleary; also notable as the only regular show with "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang in the countdown), between #30 and #29, the first Long Distance Dedication song was "If My Friends Could See Me Now" by Linda Clifford, which only made it to #54 in 1978 -- and which was the second of her four Hot 100 appearances overall, none of which made the Top 40! (Interestingly, though, the last two, one before and one after this show, peaked exactly at #41...)
Can anybody cite any other examples of songs played on AT40 by artists who never had a Top 40 hit?...
