Hi, I'm new. I'm one of those youngins I grew up listening to at40 and ct40. I first heard at40 back in the early 90's on WFCB 94 in Chillicothe Ohio. I also heard it on 97.9 WNCI in Columbus ohio. I'm unclear however of when both stations started carying the program, does anyone know? Also when they stopped? I remember b94 use to give old at40 programs out as prizes. I also would like to know when both stations were mentioned during the show. Thanks.

Welcome and you have good timing in a sense. Here is a link to news about AT40 on WNCI. www.oldies933fm.com/pages/pp_mikeeiland.htmlThere are articles on right side of that page and if you scroll down, you will find info on AT40's history on WNCI. It just so happens that I have the show after the 1990 show mentioned in that article.

Welcome to the board; we can always use new fans of CT40 & AT40.
WNCI's a very prestigious top 40 powerhouse, and would unquestionably have to be considered the Midwest's #1 top 40 station for well over 20 years.
Dukedeb--Thanks for that link; that's a superb history lesson regarding AT40 & CT40 that any fan of the show (or of Casey, naturally) would appreciate immensely.

I also would like to know when both stations were mentioned during the show. Thanks. Hi there! Have you perchance listened to the December 26, 1987 edition of the show? Casey tells the story of how a WFCB DJ wonders on the air why John Cougar Mellencamp didn't play small towns despite singing about them. Chilicothe, in turn, was inspired to petition Mellencamp, asking him to play there - and he eventually did, playing two free concerts there roughly two weeks before that show aired. Incidentally, they'd get a mention as a "Great Radio Station" playing the show just six weeks later, on 2/6/88. Those are the only two instances I've heard WFCB mentioned, but I'm sure there's more. I haven't heard them mentioned in a 90s program, but I'll listen for them the next time I hear one of those shows. ;D That's pretty awesome, though, that they held onto those old shows for prizes. WNCI? Well, they've been pretty prolific. I count at least five mentions myself: 11/16/85, 1/25/86, 5/6/89, 8/4/90, and 3/5/94 (yes, as late as 1994!). Shadoe Fan could probably give you a better idea on 90s mentions for both these two. It seems possible that at least WNCI might've had the show up until its US distribution was pulled in July 1994, but I can't say for sure with certainty. WNCI, of course, has the Ryan Seacrest-hosted edition of the show today, while WFCB relocated, and went onto become the station now known today as WODC. WODC broadcasts the re-mastered shows from the 1970s - on Sunday mornings, I believe. So, you might say they're both still airing the show in some kind of form today! And last...but not least: Welcome to the boards! (EDIT: OK, I checked out the listening guides available, and WNCI was listed as far back as the 1973 guide! So yes, they were airing it at least as far back as then. [Tell me that ain't loyalty!] WFCB doesn't appear until the 1982 guide, so I'm thinking they picked it up either in 1981 or early 1982. Maybe we'll get lucky and hear the week they signed in broadcast this year.

Here is what I put in the CT40 thread about WFCB: AT40 was apparently carried on WFCB until it was no longer aired in the continental USA. It was mentioned in 1988, and 1990-1994. Its last mention was 6-4-94. WNCI was mentioned many times, and in each year of Shadoe's run. The final mention was on 3-5-94.

Marv - I totally agree about the website. I corresponded with Mike Eiland (Of Clear Channel - he's the station's PD) on and off over the past year or two - he always appreciates any imput/comments/compliments - you should click on his link and send him and e-mail, and tell him how you feel about his website - he's very good at keeping it up to date and current.

I remember Mike saying on his website that WNCI seased at40 in 1991 do to format songs like humpty dance to bring on CT40, however not sure when they brought it back but when I listened CT40 was on in the morning and at40 was on in the evening and I know it was later then 91.

Top 40 radio started losing stations to other formats in the very late eighties due to the influx of hard care and vulgar rap music, as well as horrendous remakes of earlier classics, such as Club Nouveau's excruciating desecration of 'Lean On Me' from 1987 as aired on last week's countdown; that was definitely either you liked it or hated it remake, and for myself it was definitely a disgrace.
I don't blame WHNN for not airing any AT40 countdowns after 1986 as I mentioned on another thread, and while I don't know if any other affiliates which carry the 1980s countdown do likewise, I really can't blame them if they do.
Consequently the bleeding didn't stop until the very late nineties, but WNCI stayed with the format throughout the entire decade.
Their VP/GM had left in 1985 when the format was flat-out HUMUNGOUS both in terms of the panel size (235 when 'We Are The World' debuted on every station on the panel, an all-time record) and total listeners to launch Mediabase, but WNCI was definitely NOT among the 100+ stations which bailed out of the top 40 format between 1987 & 2002, and remains a format powerhouse to this day.
Dukedeb--I'll definitely be e-mailing that PD, and thank him for that fascinating radio history snapshot on their website. Thanks for that suggestion.

I don't much mind Club Nouveau's remake. It was a nice update to a boring original. One of the few times I heard a remake of a song I had previously heard the original of and actually liked the remake better.

This reminds me of WRVQ in Richmond, VA. They picked up AT40 in the early 70s. I cant recall exactly when, I know AT40 premiered on some AM station there and WRVQ begged Watermark to release them from their contract since a). WRVQ was 200,000 watts, b). the am station wasnt even a top40 format (an was basically holding the show hostage from anyone else). I want to say somewhere around 1973, and once Q94 got it, they've kept it all the way thru to today. Course they did switch to Caseys top 40 in the 90s. And Q94 is another station that has not changed formats since 1970. A few tweaks here an there but thats to be expected.
ps. I loved the Club Nouveau song. Course I had only been listening to music for about 3 years at that time. It spent 4 weeks atop my personal chart countdown. I even bought their album on cassettte. However I loved the Whitsnake remake (of themselves) more later on in 1987. Here I go again (radio edit) spent 11 weeks on top of my chart. A record which wouldnt be broken till 1998.

Do you have first-hand knowledge of WRVQ wrestling the show away from WGOE? Inquiring minds want to know! .

Agreed... the main fault I can find with it is that the singing is noticeably off-key throughout (a bit sharp). But hey, those were the days before Autotune (thank God).

Pete: No first hand knowledge, just something I read somewhere on the internet (so it must be true:). Can't remember where I read it though. So.......from the rumour-mill then?! Maybe it was on a message board like this one from a Richmond area jock. Could of been wiki but wiki has NOTHING on the stations backstory.

Top40fan----As numerous consultants and columnists at BB, R&R & other industry trades have pointed out, the nineties were a very tough decade for top 40 radio, which is why I give WNCI a ton of credit for sticking with the format; the fact that their signal is arguably the best in the city as opposed to being a dreaded 'rimshot' certainly helps keep them top-of-mind among listeners.

I thought somebody here said Watermark pulled the show from WGOE because WGOE kept ridiculing the show on the air.
