ELO's last train to london i think was a great song that should have charted higher. It was only on 2 at40 shows. But we would never get to hear it since it didnt chart high since they always cut the first hour out of the 1980's shows.. hate that. cause thats were all the cool songs are.. the first hour..

As far as I'm aware, neither week it was on was guest-hosted, and the 1980's shows are the full 4 hours, so it could be heard if 1980 is aired next week or the week after.

Agree with you 110 percent times infinity here!!!! I feel "Last Train" deserved to be a bigger hit than, at least, "Living Thing." It's one of my all-time favorite ELO songs. |

I too, thought it should have charted higher, but I guess you can say that about any song you like which didn't go very high. I guess there are reasons why good songs don't do so well - maybe the record company didn't promote it as much as the others; maybe not enough radio stations added it to their playlists, etc. Kind of frustrating sometimes when you're rooting for a song and it dies out quickly.

I agree that it should have been higher, but it might have something to do with the fact that it was the fourth single from the "Discovery Album." Had it been released earlier, it may have charted higher, and yes it is one of my favorite songs. I remember hearing the song on FM radio as an album track in the Summer of 1979.

I think the same thing can be said of a later single off of their previous Lp...."Mr. Blue Sky", peaked at almost the same position as Last Train...

I too love LTTL. One reason I think it failed at the Top 40 box office was because it was too "discoey." By the end of '79 the disco backlash was in full effect. Several songs that I thought should have done great ("My Forbidden Lover" by Chic, "Love Pains" by Yvonne Elliman, and the aforementioned LTTL) all peaked in the 30s or 40s. I truly believe it was just a timing thing.

Yeah, I think we could all say this about certain songs we love - which is one reason I hate that they cut the first hour on the 1979 shows. There were some great songs that only made the bottom of the 40 - largely because of disco's dominance of the upper reaches of the chart.

But the second half of the 60's was filled with so many great records that one could say a lot of songs should have charted higher back then. I love the ELO song, also like "Mr. Blue Sky(DD)", and my mind wanders to "Train in Vain" (Clash) with all this train and London talk.

Well the second single off DISCOVERY, which was CONFUSION peaked at #37, then DONT BRING ME DOWN, the third single surpassed the peak of the first single that came off that album, SHINE A LITTLE LOVE, but that tune had a very unique beat and arrangement, while CONFUSION and LAST TRAIN were standard ELO tune, maybe there was a backlash of ELO?
