How about "Im Not In Love being number two for three weeks and three different number ones kept it out of the top spot--"The Hustle", "One of These Nights" and "Jive Talkin'". That has to be brutal that THREE songs pass you up to be Number 1. I really am enjoying this thread!!!! That also happened to another 2nd place finisher: Live & Let Die by Wings. It was kept from the top by: The Morning After, Touch Me In the Morning, & Brother Louie. |

Got it blackbowl--songs that were one week at #2 kept out by songs that were ALSO one week at #1. BTW I'm listening to your city's Classic Countdown with Dick Bartley. He's playing the Top 25 of 1972 and the Top 20 of 1982.

One song I'd like to add:
Madonna's "Erotica" - oddly enough, the highest debut in AT40 history in October 1992. Debuted - and peaked - at #2 on October 17, 1992, kept out of #1 by Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road". When Boyz II Men was finished their run at #1, the song that took over that #1 spot was PM Dawn's "I'd Die Without You".
In July 1989, Madonna's "Express Yourself" was stalled at #2, and kept out of #1 by Martika's "Toy Soldiers", if I recall. Shadoe even mentioned that #1 that week in July 1989 was also by a singer with one name - also starting with "M". That was quite a giveaway, it seems.
Also, this may not be classic enough, but "Hanging By A Moment" by Lifehouse from 2001 spent the most weeks at #2 on AT40 during the show's second run and Radio & Records era. There may have been more than one #1 song that kept Lifehouse out of #1 during their time at #2. But oddly enough, "Hanging By A Moment" did hit #1 in some form - it was AT40's #1 song of 2001, despite being a #2 hit.

There was another song reportedly that also held ten weeks at #2 without hitting number 1 if this is eligible for this thread: 2002 Missy Elliott "Work It". This is according to Billboad's Achievements and Milestones.

"Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon was #1 for the year but I believe it was also a #2 peaker on AT40. I think "Business As Usual" by the Aussie boys Men At Work kept the album by the Stray Cats out of #1. Yeah, I was thinking "Thriller" might have done it, at least for some of those weeks. Then I saw that the Men at Work album had it's long run at #1 around the time the Stray Cats probably peaked, so I figured that was the culprit. |

On February 26th "Thriller" knocked out "Business As Usual" while "Built for Speed" remained at #2.

"The Horse" - Cliff Nobles & Co (1968) moved from 15 to 2 never reaching #1 behind "This Guy's In Love With You" by Herb Alpert. The instrumental was popular with high school bands.
The controversial song, "Short People" - Randy Newman (1978) moved from 5 to 2 never reaching #1 behind "Baby Come Back" by Player. The following week "Short People" was jumped by The Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive".
Both spent 3 weeks at #2.

In early 1968, Dionne Warwick's "Theme from Valley of the Dolls" spent four weeks at #2 of the hot 100. During the first three of those weeks, Paul Mauriat's "Love is Blue" was #1, and in week 4, Otis Redding's "(Sitting on the) Dock of the Bay" was #1. Another example of multiple songs beating the same #2 record to the #1 chart position.

January 1983- "The Girl Is Mine" by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney was kept a #2 by "Maneater" by Hall & Oates (1 week) and "Land Down Under" by Men At Work (2 weeks).
January 1985- Jack Wagner's "All I Need" spent 2 weeks at #2 behind Madonna's "Like a Virgin".

"Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz jumped from 8 to 2 that week, behind "Anything for You" by Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine. It looked #1 bound--but then slipped back to #3 the next week as George Michael's "One More Try" moved ahead of it. Then OMT hit #1, "Shattered Dreams" moved back to #2 for two more weeks, but never hit the top. (And JHJ only had one more top 40 hit, "I Don't Want to Be a Hero", which only reached #31.) |

How about Pet Shop Boys/Dusty Springfield's early 1988 hit: What Have I Done To Deserve This...
Held off by Seasons Change by Expose, then when they fell to #6 the following week, Father Figure by George Michael went to #1 over PSB/DS.
