"Fun" facts: 1) Both the 1987 and 1980 shows can also be heard on the Classic AT40 channel. 2) This is the third year in a row that 7/12/1980 has been chosen for the B show. According to this thread, 7/12/1980 wasn't aired by Premiere last year, although it was paired with 7/12/1986 in 2017, and also aired as a "B" in 2015. I meant to say "the third time in a row"; it's been corrected.

Nice to get an early announcement of next week's shows, and 7/4/87 would've been my guess though admittedly this one was pretty easy to call. 7/12/80 gets its 3rd airing as a 'B' show in the past five years and 4th overall in the past seven (i.e. they're on an every other year pattern of playing this one, so if you miss it, you can probably hear it again in 2021 ). I've said it before about the Triathlon Special, it is one of my least favorite shows in the whole series. Not because the music is all that bad, but it has always felt to me like it was a great concept that had the potential to be so much more than it ended up being. Several flat out terrible song choices and it felt like many of the intros were thin on substance. By the time it ended, it felt like the brass at ABC radio were more interested in feeding listeners a compilation of the artists' most recent 1980s hits rather than one of their best overall songs. For instance, the show's first two songs are Led Zepplin's "Whole Lotta Love" and Cliff Richard's "Dreaming". "Whole Lotta Love" is a total square peg in a round hole on this show (why not do "Fool In the Rain" if you were going to play a Zepplin song and you were leaning toward 80's hits for each selection?). Also, Cliff Richard - "Dreaming" (which awkwardly follows Led Zepplin) instead of "Devil Woman" or even "We Don't Talk Anymore" Robert Plant - "Sea of Love" from the Honeydrippers...why not something that actually sounded like Robert Plant, like "In the Mood" or "Little By Little" or even "Tall Cool One" (which was out at the time)? Patti LaBelle - Why not "Lady Marmalade" instead of "New Attitude"? Linda Ronstadt - "Somewhere Out There"? Really?? With all her big hits to choose from? Jefferson Airplane/Starship - they actually put "White Rabbit" in the same medley as "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, and the kicker - the Rolling Stones' "Undercover of the Night"? Could've been so much better. The Giants of Rock special from 1986 was more along the lines of what this show should've been.

"Who Shot JR" was a moderate success on the charts-However,it was a much bigger hit on "The Dr.Demento Show" & wound up as one of the top songs on his annual Funny 25 countdown in 1980.

What's up with Premiere's selection of 1987 shows this year? The previous 1987 A show was last played only two years ago, and this upcoming one was last heard only four years ago. I will still enjoy listening, but there seem to be so many better options.

This week's show having last been played four years ago is not out of the ordinary, but the 4/4/87 show was a pretty strange choice and one that was unnecessary. I still don't understand the reluctance to play 6/13/87 -- it hasn't been played in over 10 years, but it has been remastered, etc. so it's not like there's an issue there. They would merely have to have Larry Morgan do new intros and optional extras.

This week's show having last been played four years ago is not out of the ordinary It's certainly not a terrible choice, but I still wonder why they sometimes opt for shows last heard 3-4 years ago when plenty of shows last heard 8-10 years ago are available. Again, I enjoy the show regardless, but I tend to like things to make sense (and so often in this world, they don't).

I agree--always scratch my head when they choose to repeat a show that was last played three years ago over one that hasn't been played since 2010 or earlier. It's especially a mystery when Premiere won't play certain shows from the first year or two of the Larry Morgan era (which essentially began in July 2009), since they literally have to do nothing to those other than put them on the server for subscribing stations to download.

Have there been any other shows played that many times so far during the run of the show, as either an "A" or "B" show? (I'm thinking probably not). Based on those choices, it looks as though they were playing the artists' most recent hits whenever humanly possible, even if it meant playing songs that the featured artists weren't most famous for, since playing so many older songs on a countdown show tended to be frowned upon, especially by 1988. The Giants of Rock & Roll special from two years prior contained tons of older songs - perhaps Program Directors complained about those (of course, they could have just foregone the shows if there were too many oldies for their liking), so they decided to keep the Triathlon show as current as possible. You were correct about "Fool In The Rain", as that was Led Zeppelin's most recent hit. They could have played "All My Love", as that song only predated the 1980s by a few months (and though it was never released as a single, it did hit the Top Ten in radio airplay). Or, better yet, they could have played "Radioactive" by the Firm, of which Page was a member. After all, that song was from the 1980s. If they were going for familiarity, they could have used "Sea Of Love" for the Jimmy Page song and, as you mentioned, played one of Robert Plant's solo hits when they got to him. In any case, playing "Whole Lotta Love", which came out in the late 60s, did not make sense at all. "Undercover Of The Night" did seem like an odd selection. True, it was a Top Ten hit, but who played it anymore? "Harlem Shuffle" would have made more sense, as it was more recent - from two years before. Some of the selections for that show seemed arbitrary - such as Barry Gibb on the countdown instead of the Bee Gees as a whole, even though they did have hits in the 1980s, though neither hit the Top 20. They played a medley of songs anyway, most of them being songs by the Bee Gees and it ended with Gibb's solo hit "Shine Shine", which fared even worse than the Bee Gees' two 1980s hits, which could have ended the medley instead. Of course, this is all just my opinion, as well as speculation, and nothing more. Despite their random choice of songs, I actually rather enjoyed the Triathlon special, though it was by no means my favorite special show during the Casey Kasem years.

I would say: More different shows - more variety.

WTOJ is running late; it's 5 after 7:00 as I'm typing this and they are just starting the #3 song.
ETA: Now it's 7:13 PM and they're on the last extra.
ETA II: Unlike last week, they are playing the last segment with the top 2 songs and it looks like the show'll end around 25 after (about 20 minutes later than usual).

While I know almost no one would air it, I’m kind of surprised Premiere didn’t make the final edition of AT10 or AT20 available to air this coming week as a bonus show.

For those who don't want to wait until next weekend to hear 7/4/1987, it will be coming up on the Classic AT40 channel once they're done with 3/17/1979.
