You can really feel the presence of the Beatles throughout the 5/16/81 show, in several different ways: 1) John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels" is at #11; 2) George Harrison's "All Those Years Ago" is an optional extra; 3) "Yesterday" by the Beatles is an archived #1; 4) Elton John's remake of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a countdown extra; and 5) The Stars on 45 medley of mostly Beatles tunes is at #14. The Beatles factor might make this week's 1981 show more appealing to even those stations that absolutely would not play a 1981 show otherwise ... a lot of the classic hits stations with short playlists do seem to have at least several Beatles/ex-Beatles titles on their playlists. WWIS is becoming unreliable to listen to! Last week, the show ended AFTER 5. THIS week, it ended well BEFORE 5!

* Yeah, I notice this sometimes in hearing the old AT40 shows ... sometimes, it will sound just slightly sped up, or slightly slower than what is supposed to be "normal." I remember a few years ago a 1973 episode was slow.

WWIS is becoming unreliable to listen to! Last week, the show ended AFTER 5. THIS week, it ended well BEFORE 5! Dave... There are dozens of other radio stations that play "Casey Kasem's American Top 40 - The 80s". You could try any one of them and probably find a reliable station .

WWIS is becoming unreliable to listen to! Last week, the show ended AFTER 5. THIS week, it ended well BEFORE 5! I didn't mind them ending early. They started the show at about 12:45 local time and I did miss the opening and caught it during the early part of Winning by Santana. With WWIS ending early I was able to catch the opening on Max FM out of Moncton,Canada.

WWIS is becoming unreliable to listen to! Last week, the show ended AFTER 5. THIS week, it ended well BEFORE 5! It must be Friday so here comes your complaining. Exactly how did you manage to listen to shows 25 years ago? I know my local station may have said Caseys Top 40 started at 8 but it almost never started on time. It was always anywhere from 30 minutes before to 15 past the hour. It all depended on commercial load of the previous show and if someone decided to randomly start playing a few songs between shows. And that was just starting the shows late? It could easily be 12:30-1pm before it ended. The shows at night?! Top 30 Hitlist would run 10-1, but the two shows after it?! Hitline USA and Scott Shannon? 4 hours worth of shows done in about 3 1/2. The world didn't end. I understood even then as a preteen/teenager this was the world of radio and the way it was. Why is this so difficult for you to grasp?

The thing to remember about the "speeding up" you all refer to is it is quite rare for stations to actually speed music up. What is happening is stations often "pitch" the music up to make it sound brighter. This has always been common in CHR radio. If there are two CHR's in a market and one of them pitches up the music a bit, the songs sound brighter and better. I admit even as a hardcore radio guy, I am a fan of pitching up music at times, I do think it sounds better. How many times have you loved a song on the radio, bought it on iTunes, the CD, the album, and it just sounds flatter and slower.
Many radio automation systems are automatically set to pitch up to a certain level. Which may mean that AT40 carts (files) are also pitched up.

As for the time issue, even when I manually board-op'd AT20 the show rarely ended at 12:00. There were weeks we had a short commercial load and it would end at 11:50. There were weeks the show proceeding it (Backtrax USA) had a long commercial load and AT20 didn't even get started until 9:05 or 9:10 and then would run until 12:10 or 12:15.
I would always make sure Backtrax started promptly at 7, and if Backtrax didn't have a full spot load I would add fill songs until 9 and start AT20 on time. But it is literally impossible in an automated world to get these shows to start and end on time to the minute. Even when I did it manually and played the shows off CDs, it would be off.

BrettVW, thanks for sharing your radio experience and knowledge with us. I truly enjoy reading things like that. Things people like me see on the surface make a lot more sense when it's brought to light from someone who's been on the inside. Thanks again. My earliest memories of "sped up" music go back to the early to mid 1980s, when rival stations WLOL and KDWB got a lot of my listening ears. KDWB sounded a little more "sped up" than WLOL. Their playlists were mostly similar, but each had some differences, and I didn't really favor one over the other, although KDWB carried AT40 (and still does), so my Sunday evenings were devoted to them. Eventually WLOL picked up Rick Dees Weekly Top 40, so I would listen to that occasionally. Anyway, I digress. Speaking of WLOL, this year marks the 25th anniversary they went off the air. One of my favorite stations growing up. It's fun to listen to airchecks and the last 12 hours they were on the air.

See, 80sat40fan, it is reasons like this right here as to why we can't ever have nice things here on this board and expect them to last. Because of drive-by people like this who'll zoom in to race and drop info and then just zoom on away once again, without any regard or care to anything else whatsoever. But fear not! For as I'd been suspecting for a couple of weeks now, we will indeed get to hear the now-late, but always great David Bowie encouraging us: Let's Dance. Flashdance...What a Feeling!, says Irene Cara, and while Christopher Cross may not be dancing himself, he still has No Time For Talk. Kajagoogoo aren't dancing, either - they're Too Shy! Though, perhaps this isn't such a bad thing - they won't have to deal with encountering the likes of Billie Jean out on the floor, as Michael Jackson did. While he may have initially thought, She's a Beauty, maybe he should've instead told her to Beat It - Some Kind of Friend she turned out to be! Prince, meanwhile, may or may not have been having better luck with his Little Red Corvette (depending on your point of view!), while Laura Branigan seems to be doing just fine playing Solitaire. And that, is the scoop on next week's countdown from May 21, 1983: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/05-21-83.pdf

Maybe lasvegaskid thought to himself "I Couldn't Say No" to the urge of the info of KOLA's posting. He was probably watching a rerun of "Jeopardy" and posted it just before he heard something shatter out of the blue which made him to believe that there is "A Stranger In My House."
